Default Replace emergency brake handle

Has anyone replaced their emergency brake handle? I am replacing mine and was looking for any information on how, can it be changed from inside the car or do I have to remove the tunnel cover under the car that covers the shifter assembly? Any tips on the process?

inside the car no problem..... be careful with the eletrical contact at the rear of the handle if you have a cab. it is fragile...

It's a fairly simple process to disconnect the whole system.

Once you remove the center console/shift ****/boot/etc., pull off the thin clamp covering the e-brake cables at the top of the "U" (you will see what I'm talking about once you get the console off). After removing that, pull the hex-keyed cables forward out of the female slots, and the cables will unwrap from the "U." Once the cables are off, I believe it is four 10mm nuts to remove the whole handle. I don't recall exactly how to remove the handle from its base, but I do seem to remember it's pretty simple.

Easy. If you are not mechanically gifted bring it up and I'll swap it for you.

How hard is this? I just ordered a replacement lever because mine is dirty and scuffed. Would love to do it myself but don't want to do so if it's going to turn in to a s**t show. Could just have my indy do it at the next oil change.

Had my Indy replace mine with a Stainless Porsche Techquipment one I had purchased. UNFORTUNATELY the copper tab at the end of the E Brake handle was bent and my Indy had to order a new one in and retrofit otherwise the brake light was triggered on the dash. It took him awhile .......

It’s a piece of cake DIY. See post 3 & 5 above.

Hi

I am in the process of replacing my standard handbrake lever with a Tequipment one in my 1995 993 C2.
I followed the DIY mentioned in post #5 : http://p-car.com/diy/handbrake/

How to change the hand brake in case you want to install an aluminum/carbon or aluminum leather hand brake lever

Contributed by: gcarnewa@bru-hub.dhl.com

To take out the basket #10 (picture of Console) :
Remove the rubber piece #11 out of the basket on the end of the console.
Done
Remove screw #19 from the basket until you can take out #10 To remove cover#9 Done
Remove 3 screws #19 : 2 are one the back of the cover plate #9, one site under the hand brake lever. Lift up the cover and slide it forward, over the hand brake lever. Done

To remove the hand brake lever: (See attached picture of hand brake)
Remove clips #22 with the tip of a flat screwdriver.
Done (although my clip was on the driver side, not the passenger side as described in the picture above)
Slide out pin #21 => This is where I am stuck.
Loosen nut #26 (key =13mm) , there is a counter nut (M8, key = 13mm) not shown on this drawing that needs to be removed as well. Both nuts need to be removed from # 18
Push down the hand brake lever and slide it forward to get it out. This goes very easy if the hand brake is pushed down a little while moving it forward. Once the old lever is out, remove #18, #19, #20 and install these parts on the new lever.
For installation of the new lever, you have to push ****#17

So my question is : how to remove the pin #21?

View of pin#21 from the passenger side (right seat from inside the car). Clip #22 was on this side of pin #21

View of Pin#21 from the driver side (left seat from inside the car° - that is where clip#22 should be based on the DIY picture.

Just tap it and it will slide out the other side (passenger to driver side). It is probably in there pretty snug after 20+ years.

OK thanks! You must be right. I’ll bring a small hammer or put a little piece of wood between the pin and the hammer to slide it out.

Tequipment handbrake lever replaced!

It was not that difficult in the end. I had to use a hammer and a little bit of WD40 to slide out pin#21.

The only problem was that the copper tab was damaged (same as Gbos1). I did not notice it when I bought it, only when I compared the Tequipement handbrake lever with my original one whose copper tab was in good status. So now I need to order a new copper tab and figure out how to attach it to the handbrake lever.

It is so cool to do these small mods on the 993, I am getting more and more used to the car and I start to know her better.
