Default Rebuilt alternator source

Where are you guys getting your alternators these days? Sunset pricing was outrageous and on back order. Pelican has Bosch units for $258 and Vertex has some of their own rebuilds for $198. Thoughts on the above and any other sources would be great! Thanks!

That's a good price from Vertex; do they require a core? Sunset's Bosch price is probably the lowest price you will get on Bosch rebuilt unit, AFAIK.

Yes - both require a core.

Bosch, you will get a new bosch regulator and a new axle, worth more than the reman buying them separately, with other brands I do not know

For info, if ever you do not get a new voltage regulator, or axle, or bearings, call bosch with your proof of purchase
and they will make sure you get those new and sanction the bosch reman. station, at least
in europe. Should be bosch certified though.

Loren you are right, my mistake, did not read well the title.
EU directives do not allow bosch to rebuild, only to re-manufacture with new parts.
We do not have rebuilt here, sorry
Seems in the US, it is common

Loren, do you rebuild alternators? Let me know what you charge, if so. I've already got a new voltage regulator and was about to order a rebuilt unit with core exchange, but I'd be interested in mailing mine to you if it is a better price and I can avoid the core exchange. Car is out of commission for the rebuild, so down time is no problem to mail it.

I bought mine at the local NAPA - all Bosch parts, model specific for my car, and did not require a core (but $115 if you returned one).

That's the ticket. I'll check with the local NAPA. Thanks for the heads up.

Edit: Not showing online at my local store, but buy online for $4xx. Is the $115 you mentioned a refund for the core, or the final cost if you brought in a core? I'll have to give the local guys a buzz.

I had a local electric motor shop rebuild one for $90. It included new bushings and Bosch regulator. That way I knew the front spline would be in good condition. Some of the Bosch rebuilt ones I have seen lately have had the splines stripped. Is anyone doing quality control on these?

Typical alt rebuilding costs (1000 pcs volume):

bearings - $10
rotor (slip rings and/or windings) - $20
diode plate - $25
cleaning & re-plating hardware - $5
misc. parts - $2
damaged cores (per 1000 units) - $5
dis-assembly/assembly - $3
testing - $2
regulator - $15

Total Parts & Manufacturing Costs - $87
Markup to distributor (30%) - $113
Markup to retailer (20%) - $136
Markup to car owner (30%) - $176 (Which is low, since that's just about the shop cost.)

Yes, you can buy cheaper (junk) rebuilts from the typical retailers. Then be prepared for
multiple R/Rs to get a good alt installed. Obviously a DIY cost could be less, but depends
upon the extend of the rebuild, as a number of used components could be re-used.
