Default Good side of track days

The counterpoint to how my Monday at Laguna Seca ended in the "ugly side of track days" thread.

Set the stage: Session 2, running the nearly dead 2005 code dated RA1s, 175 lb. passenger, and full tank (figure 3300 lbs. all-in). And the stock exhaust--cats and mufflers to keep it under 92db. 300 HP @ crank config, per Steve's dyno when he built the engine.

This is the rear camera (the front camera view failed to upload, so I'm doing it again as I type this and will post that link). I uploaded the whole session for the benefit of the passenger, but the "action" is from about 6:30 to 13:00 where a 996 Cup pointed me by, then I really wasn't sure if he wanted by again or was just warming up. (I had talked to him earlier as he arrived in his street ride--an RS 4.0.) Bottom line is that there are 4 laps of 1:43-1:45-1:43-1:47. His car is prepped out of Jerry Woods Enterprises, and Gary Walton told me that he got down into the 1:38s in the afternoon with Gary himself some other day running 1:36. I did a best that day a couple of laps before the off/wall hit of 1:42 flat. So we're not going particularly quick here, but look how the ebb and flow goes. Even though I'm 600 lbs. heavier, on "street" tires, and down 100+ HP.

Ken...just read this and noticed your reference of Gary Walton. Is this the same Gary Walton that drove the Garretson Enterprises EM 914 in SCCA. If it is I remember the old Vallejo Grand Prix days (back in mid 80"s) where I ran and EP Datsun 510. I was unbeaten in the 3 years I ran there and that 914 was a beast...not as much of a beast as my 510 as I seem to remember running 2 to 2 1/2 seconds faster than him...wonder if it is the same guy? Wow...this brings back memories!

That would be him. And just as fast as ever in his GTL class "935 Speedster"..... (Think engine prep limited 3.6L, but in all other respects a GT2 class racer.) His son Rich is co-owner of JWE with Jerry.

Not sure what Gary ran as his own car back then, but in the earlier '80s when I got started in this stuff he ran the Garretson "shop" car in the PCA autocross series--a 2.5L 4 cyl 914 on massive slicks.

I was living in Phoenix during those downtown Vallejo autocross years. If you haven't, search You Tube and there's a piece on the event, I believe from the local CBS affiliate, Ch. 5.

And the front view is finally uploaded. Not terribly entertaining from this angle. Though the Cup does appear at about the 5 min mark. He's heavily balked, then he points me by.
