Shifter handle is loose. Opinions requested.
My shifter handle came loose during the winter storage.
Prior to me purchasing the car last fall, the PO had a local shop install a short shift kit. I'm blaming the shop for now.
I took the boot off and aligned the rubber insert at the top inside of the shaft and also aligned a larger rubber insert at the bottom. I re-installed the handle. Gave a few taps with a rubber mallet. Everything was nice and snug, but after a spirited shift, it came loose again..
Any suggestions on securing my shifter handle? My current thoughts are:
1. Rap just enough duct tape around a section of the metal shaft so that I can press fit the handle more securely along with harder taps of the rubber mallet.
2. Get the automotive goop out (or RV compound) and make a nice mess. I'm afraid that this option may put me a situation that I won't be able to remove the handle if the time ever comes.
Thoughts?

Are you talking the shifter **** or the sliders on the shifter pipe?
You think if the Allen Bolt underneath the leader boot is fastened enough inside the gap on the shifter arm it would not get loose. Threadlocker may need to be applied. Same for the four Allen Bolts on the sliders that surround the shifter pipe.

you've got a C4... and the AWD shift **** assembly is a bit... complicated.
You mentioned the rubber inserts but didn't mention a metal clip near the bottom.
Is it there?
If not, this could be at least part of the problem.
The metal clip squeezes the bottom rubber insert, capturing it between two ridges in the lever.
I cant seem to find a pic.. I know I have one somewhere.
If you don't mind a little more feedback in your shift feel, you could go to another shift ****/boot as Matt suggested.
Even going to the C2-style **** would be better, IMO. It doesn't have the vibration dampening rubber inserts in it and has a firmer feel.
Porsche used these on the AWD 993s to isolate the **** from the drive train, since the shift assembly is directly attached to the torque tube.
Hope that helps!

yep, it is different than the C2
Also, the PET diagram doesn't show it in the proper sequence. The clip is actually near the base of the shift **** assembly

you mention two really bad options.
I suggest that you remove you shift **** and reinstall using the bits that Hans has diagrammed above.
you'll probably be golden.... rod.
'course your aftermarket **** may use different bits.... that could get ugly.

Missing clip (36) confirmed. The clip slides over the base of the shift handle in a small slot which would prevent the lower rubber insert from slipping. I'll try and source one or get creative.

It can be a challenge to get on

I didn't find a clip available in my typical online 911 parts stores. If the C2 handle is secured to the shaft using a bolt with an allen key, maybe I should do the same.
Do you see any risk in drilling two holes close the to the base of the handle above the rubber insert, tap it and put my own bolts in to secure tightly to the shaft?

There are other ***** that use a allen head set bolt to secure them. They use one bolt on the front edge.
No issue doing what you suggested. Good plan!
You would want to use two, as you said. Otherwise you'll be squeezing the rubber insert from one side... hopefully that makes sense.
