Default Oil level in filler tube

Oil question again ( used search but sooo many topics...)

I drained about 9,5 litres during my oil change, needed about 10 litres of fresh oil to get the level correct on both the meter and the dipstick. With the temp gauge at 9 o'clock the level gauge is just below the top of the scale, it's very hard to see the level on the dipstick but I think it's also just below max level. But I now can see the oil coming up the filler tube, the level is about 4 inches from the top of the filler tube. I have never noticed this before so I am a bit worried about overfill.

Do you think I should drain some oil or am I still safe?

Thanks!

IMHO, the oil is a bit overfilled. If the engine gets hot, it may spit oil up in places you don't want it to be, such as the intake.

The happy point for the oil in my 993 is when the temp and oil level gauge needles point at each other with the engine fully warmed up. That equates to the dipstick showing a little bit above the lower mark. To me, the dipstick marks translate this way: Top mark=overfilled, bottom mark=add half a pint.

Keeping the oil at or near the top dipstick mark results in the engine spitting out or burning off some oil, the owner keeps topping off, and the engine burns off some more, the cycle repeats, so the owner thinks the engine is burning oil, and heads off to the shop for an unnecessary top end rebuild.

Just a thought, and something worth checking...I went to top off my oil a few weeks back, and found after just a few ounces in the filler tube, it was right at the top. Thinking this was odd, I dug around and found the remnants of some handy dandy little gizmo Porsche decided to fit inside the filler tube neck to make it easier to fill without mess - its kinda like a flexible funnel that fits down inside the filler neck. It had perished long since and there was consdirable debris in the neck effectively blocking the filler.
I searched here a bit and found most people take this useless POS out..
Just make sure you don't have the same...

Assuming the engine oil is hot, meaning the oil temp gauge has risen above then dropped back to normal operating temp and oil is fully circulating in the system, the fact that both your oil level gauge and dipstick are indicating the system is filled to the top of their range of measure would indicate that the system is overfilled. If you put 10 liters of oil back in the engine after draining 9.5 liters out, then you could be as much as a liter over. Also, the fact that you were able to get 10 liters back in would indicate to me that your filler tube is working fine.

Ok thanks, looks like I need to drain about half a litre. I already took the tube out of the filler neck.

Can I drain it via the case drain plug on a cold engine? I do not have a fluid pump and need the car for a drive tomorrow....

Yeah, the drain on the engine case is a good way to get that out. I would hold the plug against the case to control the flow, since just pulling the plug will cause the oil to gush and make a mess, and you will get more than you perhaps want.

I keep my oil at 1/3 up the stick, and have calibrated the tank sensor to be accurate. On Turbo's, they are a bit more sensitive on oil level. Too high and your risks of siphoning back into the turbos is increased (even with 996 check valves and traps in the scavenge lines).

Cheers,

Mike

I drained mine at the case once, don't remember the reason. The engine was stone cold and I let it drain until it stopped and got apx 3 qts out of the case.

Personally if I were you I would buy a cheap siphon pump at an auto parts store (< $10) and siphon it out from the filler tube.

Or you can use some clear tubing and your mouth to siphon the oil out
