P38 Range Rover????
That's the most unreliable vehicle anybody's mentioned. Range Rover has gotten massively better since then but that one is going to leak like nobody's business! You can easily get one for 7K and that's because they're crap. Enjoy the suspension faults if you do or be prepared to replace the air suspension with conventional springs.

Both my daughters worked to save (with about 25% from me) for Volvo S40's. Safe, slow......and no problems for the last 4 years on both. 2005 and a 2006, both have been hit by other drivers and repair costs were minimal as neither of my daughters were at fault. NOBODY got hurt...the best thing!
What ever you decide, if the kid has something invested in the car they will care a lot more about its condition, maintenance, keeping it clean, etc...
Just my experience, good luck!

Thought I'd update this thread for those going through the same thing.
As some above mentioned, I very quickly came to the realization that it takes about $10k to buy a decent basic transportation vehicle now. Even at that price, you'll find everything from cars that need cosmetic overhauls, to downright "unsafe at any speed" pieces of crap.
Since I already have a really nice car worth around $10k, the MDX, and she learned to drive in that, I decided to heed the majorities opinion, and keep that for her. Thanks to all for the advice.
So for the wife, I drove a couple of Cayennes. I fell in love with a 2005 Cayenne Turbo! Holy crap those are FAST! It really feels like a hand built car inside also. Simply beautiful...However, I spent some time on the Cayenne forum and got scared straight.
Did a little shopping and found a really nice Lexus GS trade at the local RR/Bentley/Aston/McClaren dealership. It is white with black tinted windows, so it matches the 993!
As a side note, when buying any car, I highly recommend doing so at the Rolls dealership; it's just a really nice buying experience. Plus I'm now on their invite list for product launches, etc...

Yes, the Showroom is shared with RR/Bentley/Aston and McClaren. They have a lot of really nice stuff in stock. Probably 4 RR, 15 Astons, 9-10 Bentleys, and a dozen MP4-12Cs. My sales guy is the top McClaren guy...

Falcon,
No offense at all, but none of those are good choices for your child. Been there and done this with three teenagers. The car WILL get crunched in the first ninety days and likely multiple times in it's life. Being in the city core makes it worse.
I suggest a Honda Accord or Civic or a two or three year old Chevy Malibu or Impala. All are bullet proof and cheap to fix.

Something else to keep in mind, Sellers on fleabay ("onlinepartbin" worked for me) that sell pre-painted (you supply VIN and Paint Code) fenders, bumper covers, etc. at reasonable rates and FedEx them to your door, simply bolt / snap it on. Yes, I made the kid pay.

My first car was a 77 Vette. That car was bad to the bone when I was 16. All the cool kids had Vettes....Chevettes that is!!
When my youngest turns 16, it will be an AWD drive vehicle for Utah climate conditions. Probably a Subaru---good vehicle for this neck of the woods.
