Default Need help finding good motor rebuild shop. Please!

Hi guys and gals. So let me tell a little history first. Last year I heard a knock from my engine (1995 Porsche 993 NB). I drove the car up to Bellevue WA to have it inspected. The shop drained my oil and cut one of my filters open and we found copper looking material. Uh-Oh!! Rod bearing? Probably. Had the car towed back home. I havent put new oil in it or anything. Its been sitting in my garage for the past year. I am currently in the middle of buying a house that is supposed to close at the end of April. At that point I am going to have my beloved car fixed. The problem isn't finding a good mech here in WA, it's finding one that doesnt want $15-20K. I cant afford that much $$$. From what Ive heard and researched is that things are not as expensive down south. I am thinking about shipping it somewhere out of state for cost purposes. I don't think I'm cheap, but I know I'm not rich. Does anyone know a reputable shop in Cali or somewhere else? Iv'e talked to a few places but can't find any info on them here on Rennlist. Any good leads would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Cheap and reputable......hhmmmmm. Unfortunately, I don't think it exists in the world of 16 year old air cooled engines.

In your neck of the woods, I'd call Steve Weiner at Rennsport Systems. (503) 244-0990. He's in Portland. I send him my stuff from Chicago.

Well i didn't say cheap! I just think alot of shops here in Wa state charge more than states that may see many more of these cars. More competition other places can drive the cost down as well. I might call Steve but he is the one who recommended the shop that told me I was looking at $20k to start.

JMHO,.................

If your engine is making copper in the oil, this isn't a cheap repair and it should not be done on a shoestring.

I don't know anyone who can rebuild these engines properly for under $15K and its more if one need a crankshaft or P/C's. Add the cost of removing the entire oiling system off the car for a thorough cleanout, and its usually more.

My best advice is for you to save your $$$$ for a bit until you have have this all done properly. This ensures that you'll retain the value of the car and many more years of reliable motoring.

Now, type in "Motormeister" into this cool website called Google.

Seriously, good luck. Good engine rebuilds aren't cheap, but sh*tty ones are.

Yes I've heard of MM. Thank you for your reply. Very helpful. Thanks for your replies everyone, and I'm aware of the statement " you get what you pay for". I guess I have been misinformed or just crazy to think that 20K for an engine rebuild is crazy. Guess I'll just but a new car. Thanks

Another thought is to pick up a used motor for $8,000 or so and sell the compromised mill. Install will run you about $1500-$2000.

For what it's worth, I think a 20k $ rebuild sounds completely nuts... freshly rebuild engines are selling for less than half that on eBay right now. With that said, if I was based in US I would also take my car to Steve W.

One of the more cost-effective places that comes recommended is Mark Nadler at Exotech in Plaistow, NH. Couldn't be further away from you, unfortunately. But he did my top end for about $3500 and it's been flawless for six years and 30k miles. He's done other Rennlister's cars as well -- FastFreddy and a few others, I think. He's a small operation, and a racer, too, so you'd have to be patient. But he's constantly tearing down and building race motors for the local PCA crowd around there and he knows his stuff.

Might be worth a call.
