Thanks for posting the video. I wound up replacing my gears a couple weeks ago. I tried to do it the way you described, but wound up just removing the needle and the speedo face. It came off easily enough followng the instructions on p-car.com and gave full access to the motor. It's always appreciated to see alternatives...

Thanks for the video!
I did however replace the gears a couple days before you posted the video. I did manage to completely get the motor unit off so I did not need the use of the tweezers. The gears that came off mine were still in pretty good shape - I did not have any odometer issues yet. Just preventative as I had the front off to replace the plastic lens to a glass one anyways.
The most time consuming part is removing the ring surrounding the plastic lens.
For those that needed to replace the broken gears I recommend to replace the plastic lens to the glass one you can buy for $12 from NHS. The glass looks so much better and matches the other glass dials.

cheers

Thanks for the comments everyone. Just glad to help out fellow Rennlisters as I have found a lot of useful information on this website for myself over the years.

I got a little crazy and edited my video for HD and some text edits.

Here's the new link:

Enjoy -

Great job.......awesome that you did the video........

Getting that bezel off for me was the hardest part.....patience is the key in not damaging it......as you just want to rip that thing off!! I know I would have sworn during the video.....nice job.....

Like the skilled tweezer method to remove and replace, don't know if that is easier though than disassembly.........to each their own as they do the job............

Thanks for the great video..........I autographed the back of my speedo with a marker when I was done with the fix miles indicated.......and dated it......

Hi guys, my 964 has the same problem. Changed the gears but still not working. It does not count miles. Only shows the speed.
Any ideas. What else i can do?
To be honest im about to replace it with a new VDO or a GPS speedometer even though i will loose the the auto open of the rear spoiler.
Any help is most welcome

That is great info, mine just broke last week.

Anyone know the procedure to also convert the speedo to KM/H while fixing the gears.

Marc, perfect timing to find this link as my odometer recently quit. Thanks for the DIY video.

As a point of reference, I recently had this same issue. Not wanting to tear my speedo apart, I sent it to North Hollywood Speedo. Cost was $130, turnaround 5 days.
