Default How to clear hazed plastic headlight lens - on your other car

Just did the following on my VW Jetta.
Sanded the headlight lens exterior wet with 1500 grit sandpaper to remove the delamination. Wiped it off and made sure it was dry. Sprayed it with acrylic clear spray paint from a can. Now lens is clear as glass. All done right on the car in place! Not sure how long it will last. I'll keep you posted!

Seemed like a neat trick worth sharing!
Try at your own risk.

Andy

An easier way is to sand with 2000 grit if you have pitting. Then just use a paint scratcht remover. I use "KIT" scratch remover commonly sold in the wax section. It works very well. Most $30 system is basically the same thing.

Wetsand the lens with 2000 grit.

Buff with a 4" bonnet on a cordless drill if you don't have a polisher.

Buff with a polisher and a small pad if you do. Takes about an hour a side to do right.

Use a moderate cut compound followed by a polishing compound.

Here's a Mazda 3 I did last fall.

Before both sides looked like this:

Here's a link to a DIY I posted for cleaning up the headlights on my 2002 540 iT.

It may seem a little overboard, but they turned out as good as new. The only thing is that you have to be sure to get that UV spray to finish them off, otherwise they are susceptible to hazing even sooner than normal. Id suggest getting Lamin-x or a similar product after youre all done as well.

And for the record, I think headlights for this car run about $1k each and you can't get new lenses.
