Physically, yes or maybe, but the last three digits make a difference as to the V setting and T.C. of the voltage regulators.

The -040 happens to be 14.5V with a -7mV/°C.. Others with the same 1 197 311 XXX are 14.8V, 14.1V.

Autozone has rebuilt Bosch alternators for short money.

I had an intermittent problem with my alternator (light would go on and off) until it finally stopped charging the battery and the car died. After checking charging voltage, I ordered a new Alternator from Vertex. When I went to replace the old unit I found one of the nuts (Main large wire) was loose causing my problem. If I would have checked first I would have just tightened the bolt and would have saved me some money. My advice would be to check it before doing anything, just in case you have a loose wire.
