Ok, so w/the car safely tucked away in my garage & battery fully charged (battery tender light is green) I can assess.
Battery: 13.07V
Battery w/car running @ 2500 rpms: 11.91V
Connections look good. Looking back at previous owners records the alt. has never been replaced (car now has 92k miles), so failure is certainly not out of the question. Ironically I changed out the fan/bearing & all belts 9 months ago so had it all apart. Isn't that the way it goes when stuff fails....argh.
Can I assume the alt. has failed or are there other options?
Is there a regulator/brushes kit or do I order a new (or rebuilt) one?

Given your stated mileage, I would not monkey around with replacing a $30 regulator, only to have the alternator bearings go out three days later....

Alt as expected .... in my experience, if the shaft spins smoothly, and there is no axial play, I'm of the camp that replaces the $30 brush set: never yet had a subsequent bearing failure in any car .... but have replaced several brush sets.

Optima batteries have poor quality control and WAY overrated....as mentioned previously - hit or miss on how good they may go........I even had a battery store that sells them tell me not buy one from them...........went with interstate...........second one in 16 years after the original P-Car battery..........
Good luck on fixing the alternator/regulator............

Sunset just quoted me $650 for re-manufactured alt. & $1300 for new OEM from Germany, which can take 3-5 weeks.
I'm starting to warm up to the idea of the $30 regulator/brushes replacement and taking my chances on the bearings being ok (upon careful inspection).
Garth, can you direct me to a source or part # for this kit ?

Porsche part number: 928 603 142 00
Bosch part number: 1 197 311 040
From Auto Atlanta (in Porsche packaging): $246.09
From Auto Atlanta (Bosch unit...which is what they are): $97.59
Pelican Parts: $95.50
And if you search the web or eBay on the above numbers, probably less.

From ebay ....
one example
and another
or a page full
Don't get too hung up on the last three digits .... they are basically all interchangeable.
These are the 'high end' ones .... for half the coin, same items without the Bosch name can be found by widening the search ..... mostly all (Bosch inc) are made in Spain or Hungary ...

Amazing place indeed !!
Thanks for that generous offer Hawg, but $258 from Pelican w/free (or $3) shipping is more like it.
Thanks Alex for your research/prompt response...Rennlist to the rescue!
