Default intermittent alt warning light

Last week, first thing in the morning upon startup, the alt light stayed on for 30 seconds or a minute. I got worried and then it went off and I figured the belt was slipping but stopped. Well, this morning same thing, but the light stays on about twice as long...

Thoughts on this?

Do you have a voltmeter? I have one I can plug into my cig. lighter socket. You should be getting around 13.5 v when the engine is running. A dying alternator can REALLY leave you stranded.

You might have worn or sticking brushes that are part of your voltage regulator.

Install a voltmeter in your car...best add-on I've installed. I read 14.1V to 14.2V at idle.

I'll check on the age. But, it occurs to me it very well may the regulator. Is that easily accessible or does it require major surgery to get there?

Where did you mount the voltmeter? Pics?

Perform a search or maybe someone will chime in. I've never had to service mine...yet.

As already mentioned, take a battery voltage measurement while the warning light is on.

Mine sits above the switches on the center console and is held to the carpeting with Velcro. I don't like cutting or drilling holes in my car.

I made mine. Whatever you use and however you connect it, make sure it reads the actual battery voltage. If it is connected to the cigarette lighter, take a measurement at the battery and confirm that the voltages are the same. In my case and due to the type of voltmeter I chose to use, I was able to connect it directly to the battery, after all, that is the voltage I want to monitor.

Had the same happen to me. Only got worse. Worsened by use of heater, lights,...

Changed alternator and it solved my problem. Was not expensive.

Had the same problem, Light would come on and then go off. Found that the wires on the back of the alternator had come loose and needed to be tightened.

Default Change out the alternator at a Dealer!

On 4/4/08 Danbury Porsche replaced the alternator and belts. The rebuilt unit was $315.55 plus three hours of labor and the belts. The total bill was $798.94. FYI - The rebuilt one failed on 5/19/08 and the dealer had to do the job a second time plus pay for my towing. It was a blessing that I had this work done at the dealer. They told me that this was not the first time that a Bosch reman had failed within three months of the install.

No cutting or drilling!

Hopefully I picked pics of ones that fit 993s' cigarette lighters.

Same here. No cutting or drilling, and most important of all, it shows actual battery voltage at all times, ignition on or off.

I had the same problem and after checking voltage and seeing low voltage I ordered a new alternator. During the replacement process I found that the nuts were loose on the back of the Alternator and there was nothing wrong with the old Alternator !!!!!!!!!!!! There is another post listing the same problem, I would just check the nuts on The Alternator, It will require taking the old unit out to see the back, If the bolts are loose it is an easy fix if not then order a new alternator and you are already halfway done with everything apart.
