Audi r8? Thoughts?

I have driven the new GTS model on track in direct comparison to the GT3RS 11. Both were client's cars. I would hands down go with the GT3 for track use. Power is great on both, but the GT3 gives better feedback and feels more nimble in tight turns.

The guy I bought my tt from had just purchased a V10. He said it was probably the last time you could "affordably" buy something with more than eight cylinders. There is very little room for luggage....the 911's spoil us in that regard....Chris

Thoughts? I have very impure thoughts about that car. If I had a choice between an R8 and any newer Porsche I'd buy the R8. I've driven a friend's V10 Spyder. It is unreal. It's a lot less complicated than it looks, drives beautifully and makes a sound that is divine. Or should I say hellish. Everything about that car is put together in a way that makes you smile. While a Porsche is held back by its evolutionary development, the R8 was created as a clean slate every day super car from scratch. The exterior is beautiful, the interior is unlike anything else, especially with the carbon fiber package, the car is just incredible.

R8 looks great, but the performance-per-dollar ratio is very poor. So clearly, people are buying it for styling instead of performance.
I'm an Audi fanboy, but I just don't see the allure.

My wife wouldn't understand 2 porsches, so I started looking at others.
The Ferrari and lambo's at that price point make me nervous with repairs. I'm looking for something that could be driven daily without risk of high maintenance cost.
The Audi looks great, is very drivable, the prices are reasonable for the car and I think I could do a majority of the maintenance in my garage.
I need o do the driveway test, as mine is very steep.

I agree with Ilko. This is quite positively the best super car on the road today.
The only thing that stopped me from buying one was that, as with every other mid-mounted engine configuration, I CANT FIT!!!!!

Driven many thousands of miles in an R8. Love the car. Its v grown up and its the first car ive had that had over 50k miles on the clock that had the capability of looking and feeling brand new. Wonderful build quality. Also driven through terrible weather in one and felt the security of a 4wd system and planted feel of a car with more sensible weight bias than a 911 in adverse conditions. Its not fatiguing on long journeys and overall feels v stable and almost docile for a car that can do a decent turn of speed. However its the car i would buy with a sensible hat on. It doesnt have the crazy feel of a 458, doesnt have the surge of a Ford GT or the ridiculousness of an SLS. But its the car i'd go for with a sensible hat on. Not quite there yet myself but close. The clicky gear gate gets some getting used to.

I drove one of the 8's at Infineon last year. It was a very easy car to drive, no drama, no surprises, plenty of power. Had some sprinkling that day so the track got damp (not really wet though) and the thing still stuck like glue. Overall very nice!
However, I don't see it as a good add-on car to have in the garage in addition to the 993. It strikes me as the car you'd take for trips you typically take the 993 (fun drives with one other person at most and little/no cargo)... so why not get something that fills a gap.
Maybe a track car -- get a GT3 or whatever for the track.
Maybe something a bit more "practical", one of the hot 4 door Audi's or an AMG beast -- at least something with some luggage space to cover when the 993 won't.
I guess, I just see too much overlap between the R8 and the 993 to say it would be a good choice.
But I certainly can't fault the R8... it's great!

I have never driven one, but I love the look. I can't afford the V10. My choice would be V8, one owner, low miles, manual transmission, carbon interior and engine compartment option. If they ever get to approx. $90,000 I might have to do some real shopping, not dreaming.

I think the 993 and r8 are apples and oranges. I already have a decent 4 door jag, but it's just used as a commuter car.
That is why I'm thinking Audi R8.

Beautiful car- love Audis, been driving them also since 1980. Would be a great DD even in Iowa if you could stand to get salt and snow on it...
