Default muffler tip rattle

I have a rattle that is driving me crazy.
It involves the drivers side muffler tip.
Whenever I come to a stop, there is rattling for 10-20 seconds.
This has been going on for a long time (6 months)
I removed the muffler tip, the noise goes away.
The muffler tip does not seem to have anything loose.

Anyone else have this problem?

Possibly the muffler tip causes a vibration of some tin.

Each time I take the tip off and on, I make sure it is not touching anything.

Does anyone have a muffler tip laying around that I can purchase?

It would probably obvious if there was something loose inside the tip itself.

Since the tip is not hitting anything, I wonder if there is just enough weight that displaces the muffler to vibrate against something, and when the tip isn't on, doesn't contact?

I know it is tough to see around the muffler, but maybe you can see if there is any play in the muffler itself.

I had a strange rattling at ~60mph on the passenger side, turned out, one of the fender liner screws would vibrate against the fender. I wound up grinding the tip of the screw down, so it didn't contact the fender.

I know it doesn't affect performance, but I do understand how it can make you crazy trying to track it down.

Maybe the sealing ring needs to be tightened down more. Could be the sealing ring or the donut thats rattling.

I had a similar rattle and it was the tail pipe itself. I quieted the rattle with a bit Permatex muffler sealant around the inner lip of the tail pipe. JB Weld might work as well.

Kika, great advice. I have loosed, adjusted, and retightened the muffler two times, Still rattles

Paddy, you just made my day. Thank you for the offer.

P-daddy may be on to something. I will work on the sealing ring.
If it still rattles, then I will do Dudleys advice.

Thank you for all the help.

I have two perfect sealing rings/donuts and two of the factory Aeroquip clamps. One had two small cracks.
Shout of needed.

Could heat shields and / or their fasteners be the culprit?

Somewhere I have my original tips. They are the smaller Bischoff like the ones shown above, they would need to be cleaned up. I'll look for them tonight.

If you want them let me know, I plan to go by Sunset Hills tomorrow and I could probably drop them off somewhere.

Thought a bit more about this...

Since the rattling occurs at stop, suggest you get a glove, or maybe a towel, when you hear the rattling, touch various pieces and see if you can ID the culprit. if it is the tip, you should be able to "muffle" it by touching it, or at least altering the tone, hopefully that can help narrow it down.

my rattle only occurred at 60mph, so it was a little tougher to get out and diagnose.

Kika, you are exactly right!
Whenever I would touch the muffler tip (top, bottom, or side to side) the rattling would go away.
I just need a another muffler tip.

Hey Erik! Good to hear from you. Will they fit on a Gillet muffler system?
I do not think Gillet and Bischoff are interchangeable?
If I am wrong, I would love to have them!
Maybe someone could chime in to verify?

If they are not interchangeable, and someone on Rennlist has Gillet tip (driver side), I would love to purchase.
