Jerry/EPE is not exactly a 'budget alternative' to the dealer, but he is the best around (and one of the best anywhere) for air-cooled cars. If it's anything more than an oil change, and it's Jerry all the way... (and usually for an oil change too!).

Autobahn is good, I used them for some things when I lived up in Salem for a while. Rick knows what he's doing. They are a bit more reasonably priced.
If you are well north of Boston, try Mark Nadler at Exotech in Plaistow, NH ... just over the Mass. line from Haverhill. He is a small operation but very reasonably priced and highly regarded by the PCA racing crowd. He did the top end on my car and a few other Rennlisters' cars.

Thanks everyone !
I took it to EPE last Friday, and saw Matt. Evevryone at the shop was down for the Siebring Races, so the shop was on the quiet side. Matt did a fairly detailed inspection and turned up a leakiy front diff and a torn boot on the steering rack in addition ot the brake and ignition issues Norwell Porsche cited. Looks like a $5-6K bill to correct it all. When I pull the trigger, I;ll get the Bilstien HD and ROW springs on it to lower the 4X4 front-end look to something more aggressive and correct for the car.
I got into the C4S fairly cheaply (I think) so this bugs me less than it might otherwise. Past owner was not your typical 'P93 Nut', and he let things slide. Otherwise really happy and what a blast to drive ! More noise than I expected, but what a great sound it is ! ...Hard to drive with all the wood in the way.
I'll post a pix of the car once i have the paint detailed out. The former owner thought he'd be helpful and touched up the chips on the hood, and I'm wishing he'd worn his glasses when he did so.
BTW: It came with a set of Fikse FM-10 wheels, which have extensive corrosion issues... I know Fikse got sold, but who would be competent for refinishing them ? They look very good otherwise and I'd like to get them back into service... They have a CNC machined hub that was clear-coated and a polished outer lip. The corrosion has gone under the clear-coat. I think a re-finish would require disassembly meaning a new seal and hardward upon re-assembly...
Does anyone have experience with Rim & Wheel Works in Waltham ?

Rim and Wheel Works are an excellent company on all accounts. Having said that, I don't have personal experience with them. But many in BMWCCA do.
BTW, if you are a PCA member, there are two chapters active around Boston - NER and NCR. Autocross season starts in April if you want to come hang out or actually autocross your car.

Careful, it was a little message similar to this a few years ago from Mike that started my plummeting down the slippery slope.

I also recently bought a '97 C4S which I am taking delivery off in early March (after PPI, it needs a new clutch & shocks). I got in fairly cheap as well so I think it'll work out.
We should create a local 993 chapter I have registered for the NH autocross in early April.

Ah, Dennis, the first one is always free
Ferik, do you mean NCR autocross in Ft. Devens or SCCA in NHIS parking lot? Forst Devens is a much larger space and it's an airfield without curbs, light poles and trees - makes all the difference in the world in a rear-engined car, trust me.

Jason, is RimPro still doing the wheel refinishing? I thought they went into D-force wheel import business and away from refinishing, but I might be completely off on this.
