Installing a fixed wing
First off I want to say that I think the stock 993 rear end is the best of all the 911 brood. However, I've been bitten by the fixed wing bug and I decided to install a Turbo S style rear decklid. I opted for the MA Shaw piece and I am very happy with the fit. I just need to do some minor bodywork touch-ups and it will be ready for paint. While the wing is post curing on the car I've been thinking about the grill assemblies. I have the Shaw reproduction ventilation (outer) grill but I would also like to install a factory protective (inner) grill with all the associated hardware too.
Does anyone have a detailed photo set of how the spacers and boots are arranged between the grills? It appears that the clamp heads slide into the ventilation grill? Has anyone put an assembly together using the MA Shaw ventilation grill and factory protective inner? Lastly, anyone looking to let go of a factory protective (inner) grill?

Sean, I think I understand what you are asking so I'll take a shot at an answer.
I am putting together a MA Shaw RS tail and I am considering using the inner grille as well, but have not made up my mind, I think I need to finish it first and see how it will look.
The inner (lower) grille is held in by plastic T pins that slide into channels on the back bottom side of the grille. These are secured with the push on nuts. With the RS tail, and I think your TS tail, the lower grille has to fit inside of the tail on top of where the tail bolts to the engine lid. Heres a pic of the pins and the channels they fit in:

So to attach it you can't really use the plastic pins because they wouldn't be strong enough to hold the tail down. The grille doesn't really lay flat in the RS tail either. It only leaves you with 2 choices to mount it. Try to get it to lay flat and then drill through it and run the bolts all the way through or after the tail is mounted use double sided tape to hold it in place covering the mounting bolts for the fiberglass tail. If I use the extra one I have I plan to use double sided tape. It doesn't really fill the opening though because the motorized part takes up some of the room on the sides.
Mine is just laying in my basement until I finish it, so here is a pic of the inner grille just laying in place inside of the RS tail, please ignore the sanding marks, I am only about half way through the prep, I plan to "paint" the inside of the tail with black rubberized undercoating to make it look a little more finished.

You can see what I mean about the width isn't quite enough, but I still think it will look better than nothing. The other option in some kind of screen material but I think that would be a bitch to keep clean.
If I don't end up using mine you are welcome to it, but I think I will use it. If you can find one try to find part # 993 512 333 00 (01C). That is the part from the early 95 that did not have the fresh air intake so the grill is the same all the way across where the newer part #, ending in 02, has a cutout on the left side.
Let me know if this helps or if you need any other pictures.
Good Luck with it

Thanks for the reply Erik. I appreciate seeing the inner details of your spoiler. That clamp arrangement is most likely how mine should go together too. Kind of like an outer to inner grill sandwich, with spacers separating the grills. I think the clamps slide into the outer grill, go through to capture the inner grill, and are secured through the wing floor I think the turbo S opening for the protective grill is different (bigger) than the RS tail to accommodate the intercooler of the turbo engine. I'm pretty sure I will probably need part number 993 512 501 00 for the turbo tail.
How do you plan to mount the ventilation (outer) grill?
Good luck with your install!

Must admit, the thought of installing a whale-tail HAS crossed my mind from time to time.
THE best whale-tail, IMHO, is the one used on the mid 1980's Carreras. OOOOOH, Baby, what a shape, the most delicious looking picnic-basket if ever there was one.

I like the rear spoiler look on all 80's 911s too. I like the Carrera and pre-intercooler tails a little better than the tea trays but all look fine. For me the OEM rear and ducktail look great but a 993 looks best in a tail styled in turbo S.
