996s & 997s are the ones losing value. If I had a 993 (C4S or any of them) I would be hanging on to it and lusting over it every day in my garage.
IMO, it is the perfect aesthetic proportions of the 993 that are aiding its value because if it's performance you're after it seems more logical to buy a 996 or 997 for the same or, as is most often the case, less money.

I have to say - I find the pricing discussions interesting. I had my 97 black/tan 4s on the market two years ago - advertised in many places. At that time it had 48k miles, full history, sport seats, tasteful mods. Lots of extras. For 41k.
I couldn't get a person to come within 10 miles of it. Everyone wanted to email me - no one wanted to call or come see the car. I probably had 50 emails with various questions.
There are LOTS of digital tire kickers out there. I find far fewer actual buyers. My .02

Sold my 96 C4S last year in just a couple days to a RL'r. Miles in the 40's ,Sport seats, 6-spd and went for just under 40K. C4S cars are bringing good money, I sold it at a fair price to a great guy, high profit was not my goal. It was a good deal for both of us. I had paid 40K for it 3 yrs earlier.
Average mile C2S cars are bringing as much or more than my 12K mile 07 C4S , The aircooled 993 will always be a disirable model and less supply and steady demand keep prices aloft.
We can all agree I was an Idiot for getting rid of a "keeper" with the 993..

I just know that when looking in late 09 there were very many choices of 993's. I felt there were so many choices that I was passing up good cars just because it wasn't the real color I desired. There were quite a lot of black and silver models available, but I wanted Arena Red. I still can't believe I found it. Today I know I couldn't be that picky.
I was just so blown away at the lack of 993's on any of the online search engines and especially TruSpeed. Since supply is low they must be worth more than in 09. However, to be worth more there needs to be the same amount of demand or more and that I do not know, since my car isn't up for sale.
So it is subjective but I don't think we are too far off in our opinion.

Unfortunately I don't know of any company like Zillow (for housing) that tracks specific sales data for these cars. However the general consensus among this 993 forum is that prices have increased due to at least 2 objective reasons: 1. Reduced supply given the significant amount of exports of this model to Europe over the past 2 years; 2. The improved economy as measured by key metrics such as lower unemployment, increased housing sales and lower consumer debt levels.

Ha ha.......not in my area. Honestly, if I didn't have what I have, I'd never spend this kind of money on cars today. And it's now beyond no place to drive them (outside of a track) at any more than a pony trot without risk of jail time. When I was a kid with these things I never thought I'd see us this down in the dumper.

Finding the right one became an obsession (ask my family) and it was a fun challenge. I kind of miss that part.

Been lurking on here for a while. I've been searching for a 993 C4S Blk/Blk for over a year now. I was deployed in Iraq in late '09-early '10, and there were plenty to choose from, so I didn't feel any need to hurry. I started getting serious about finding one a year ago. Of course, now the supply is dried up, and anything with <40k miles is listed at 55-60k. That's more than I'm willing to spend, so I obsessively check autotrader/cars.com/rennlist/pelican/6speed/search tempest daily and wait to pounce.
The closest I've come was October, when I found a listing on craigslist in Seattle (I live in Georgia) for a '97 C4S with 84k miles. Was listed at $42k. I called the next day, was told I was the 5th call he'd received. We talked cars, and I told him to keep me in the loop. When I called the Porsche specialist in the area a few days later to arrange a PPI, the car was actually there getting a PPI for the eventual buyer. He gave me the low down, it was in great shape, a few minor things (he gave me a $600 quote to make it perfect). I called the seller an hour later to make an offer, and he'd just sold it. Buyer was from Alaska, bought sight unseen, for (I was told) $40k.
Just thought I'd chip in with a recent story of a known sale.

I bought it on Ebay back in Nov2004 when it had 65k miles. Drove DD since and now it is up to 172k !
3rd bumper installed by Autohaus in '10, kid rear ended me. However, original front bumper with expected dings (covered up by Beatle City bumper sticker). Those are 993 seat custom by Top Stitch of LA. Still have old seats but they need full restoration. Those are B&B tips as just last week installed new Porsche mufflers to get rid of B&B booming cabin resonance. Motor full rebuild in 2010 by Don at Autohaus Porsche (Lancaster, Pa) w/low miles Ebay stock pistons. PSS10s, B&B headers (they are keepers but cannot use stock engine cover). Wheel wells lack their plastic underwear; breaths better (I have the parts stored). Driver side fender (can't tell from pics) has some dents due to tree limb landing on it ! Midnite Blue Metallic with Flamingo Red interior. Since engine rebuild no SAI CEL. Showing are the after-market 17" with Blizzaks; have stock 18" wheels w/summer tires.
I have recent hots for 993TT as for some reason lots of 993TTs for sale now-a-days.

PS: Things to do list:
Install that speedometer trip plastic reset gizmo.
Finish new spark plugs install and caps+rotors.
Need to get stock 993 C4S tips as those B&B tips look boy-racer.
Get some Control/Contact Cleaner onto the switches that control the side mirrors and horn reacts sometimes to turns.
Get stock 18" wheels powder coated.
Those driver side tree dents could be fixed with dent puller but I suspect some putty would be involved to get it smooth. Paint is original and it shows !

I paid $27k last month for a 1995 C4 with 98,000 miles on the odometer. I put in an additional $4k on maintenance, flush and replace fluids, plugs and wires, new radio, and miscellaneous fixes. Runs great, pristine interior and exterior. Polar silver/blue interior
