Yes .. anything built after July would be model year '98 (see above posts) but the vin numbers aren't always sequential because of production variables like exclusive options or special ordered items that might take longer to produce.

Great info on production number. Any idea where/who I can get a letter saying the car is 1 of 1292 produced for MY98 ?
My car number is 867. I am trying to get collector plate. Criteria is 15 years or older with world wide production of less than 1500. To get the plate, the insurance company wants proof on the production number. Porsche is of no help, their response is they don't release production figures.
Thanks in advance.

Ok .. then your car was finished after the mid July cutoff for model year .. usually coincided with the factory taking their summer vacation for a month and returning to the next model year's production .. I've been told in that 4 week break, the engineers and management in charge of the production lines would make all the switchovers and changes to inventories, computer programs, machinery .. etc., that the new model year demanded and be ready to roll when the lines resumed in August. I am such a geek ... no?

Is your car highly optioned? As JPP mentions elsewhere in this thread, the last cars rolling off line tended to be more highly optioned in an effort by the factory to move that parts inventory off the shelves. Mine is decently optioned with HiFi, heated 8-way seats, leather seats F/R, Motorsound, Wide Ovals, Turbo Twists with Colored Crests...no Tippy or LSD tho...

I know this is an old thread but this post is simply not true. There WERE ROW 993s produced in calendar year 1998. Turbos, cabs, Targas, and WB coupes were all produced in the 1st quarter of 1998. Very regular for Porsche to keep producing old model until there is a direct replacement for it.

I just checked my VIN - looks like my C4 Cab with a birthday of 7/97 was production number 0191......My Black / Black C4 must have been on the line just ahead of yours. Hoping that Wilhelm was on his game that day!
