Question Questions about 993 odometer

Got some questions about 993's odometer:

1. Is it common that 993 odometer stops working?

2. If we bring our 993 to the Porsche dealer to fix the odometer problem, would the carfax report shows some sort of odometer fix record?

3. For the Los Angeles area, any good places (other than the dealer) that can fix this problem well?

Thanks

Palo Alto and N. Hollywood speedo repair are the recommended shops here in California if you don't want to fix it yourself. (http://www.odometergears.com/product...1-993+94-98/72) This is the gear that goes bad....

It is not uncommon for the odometer to stop working on a 993. Happened to me on my '95 and on the current '98. Plenty of gear repair write-ups are availiable if you choose to fix it yourself. Can't speak to your second or third question.

Fairly common. Here is a DIY link;

If you search this forum there are a lot of postings. I would stay away from the dealer for the reason you mentioned plus the excess cost.

North Hollywood Speedometer is a great shop to get it fixed in the LA area. http://www.nhspeedometer.com/

I have to jump in here and disagree. Everybody always says this is a "piece of cake" job......IMHO....this is NOT an easy job...for most people. The procedure itself is not hard to understand, but it is a very delicate, tedious process, with LOTS of opportunity to screw up the face of odometer, the glass facing, your dash, etc. Personally, I do a lot of work with my hands, and I have a lot of patience for delicate work...so I did this myself. But I know that is not the case for most people. I'm not suggesting that you can't do it...I just want to better "illuminate" the facts for everybody.

Unless you are pretty good with your hands, and have lots of patience...I would send it to North Hollywood Speedo to be fixed. There probably isn't anything on the car that you look at more than the speed/tach....so if you screw up...you will be reminded often.

Palo Alto Speedometer will mount the outer ring with their custom machine to get a perfect seal for only $25. That's the most difficult part of the job. I've rebuilt a few and just stopped by their shop and they mounted it while I waited.

So, do you mean that North Hollywood Speedometers won't mount the outer ring to get a perfect seal?

Where did I say that?

No, I was saying that if you replace the internal gear yourself, Palo Alto Speedometers will mount the trim ring for a small fee. I have no idea if North Hollywood Speedometer will do a partial job for those that do the DIY. I do know North Hollywood Speedometer will rebuild the entire speedometer correctly.
