Question Help on Dashboard project

I have some cracks from sun damage on the top of my dash - just above the instrument cluster. Has anyone replaced the dash... any suggestions/recommendations?
Thanks.

John

The guys that fix tears and splits in vinyl seats do magical work. Might check with one of them. If you have a connection with a dealer you might check with the used car manager.

I would contact Cars Dream in Poland at the email address ebay@carsdream.com. Send them the photo and see what they would charge to cover it in leather and stitch it to match the OEM leather dash.

That is a whole lot easier that fixing splits in a dash. I'd agree with Chuck in exploring a complete recover.

Thanks Chuck - I will contact them and see what they have to say. Do you know if Dallas does dash work? They did a great job on my steering wheel.

IMHO, I'd source a used dash before attempting a vinyl repair in that area.

Unless your windshield has limo tint, the repaired areas will likely be visible.

I was referred to this upholstery shop in downtown San Francisco recently which would be close to you if you're still in San Carlos. He does a lot of high-end work in the Bay Area:
Dan Acker Leatherworks

I don't know if Dallas does dashes. One problem if Cars Dream does the job is the time you would be without the dash. With all the shipping, it takes awhile. The upside is their work is great, their materials are the best and their prices are very good. Get several bids from the above places and you'll be good to go. Keep us posted.

Given the size shipping is going to be expensive. The dash will need an over size box to reduce the risk of damage and the rate will be determined by the volume, not weight. Cheaper and quicker to source a US company and preferably a local one.

Thanks guys - lots of good input here. I also have a new detail guy in the east bay who may have a good local contact. I do like the idea of recovering with leather... would look and smell great.

Unless your car won't be out in the Sun much, I'd steer away from leather on the dash. It will really take a beating from the heat. If it were me, I'd attempt to repair it before replacing or recovering. Check with www.leatherique.com. They have a crack filler that I believe is compatible with vinyl and they can match the exact color of the black dash with their water-based paint. If you're careful and meticulous, you can do it with the aggrevation of removing the dash. As stated in the preface of my calculus book, "What one fool can do, so can another". (I did it but it just took me longer!)

I would try the crack filler - but the edges of the cracks are raised. Seems you would need to fill and lightly sand to smooth out... then would need to touch up with an exact match on color.

I did some additional research...

A few new data points:
Dallas does leather dash work and charges -
- Both upper & lower sections $1100.
- Upper only $725.
- Lower only $425.
Plus shipping. ~ $300. Turn around time about a week.

A new dash from Germany - 3 to 5 weeks delivery - $2,557.

Who has replaced a dash and what is involved...
