Bill, that lower one has a stud and nut on it. What is that about? Is that an OEM Porsche shifter?

I took pics with the tunnel cover removed; unfortunately none with the boot removed. I should have had someone activate the shifter while I was under the car to see how all this works. But then, I've also never seen so many linkages needed to so such a simple job.

yes, but FD modifies the attachment to the guide tube, all the stock ones, including RS have a ball & cup

here are the FD pieces, top to bottom, modified RS shift lever, long RS fork & bearing plate, platinum rod(same as golden rod but w/ a boot), guide tube using spherical joints on the ends(this part is totally different from stock or RS

green

the modified RS lever is connected to the guide tube by the stud/nut, rather than the ball/cup used on stock versions(including RS)

this pic shows the stock and unmodified RS lever

here are the FD parts

green #1 & #15 are modified to eliminate the ball/cup, yellow is the shift rod w/ spherical joint end rather than stock rubber connector

here is the end of the platinum rod and stock rod(not RS)

Bill, thanks for the details.

That rod with the orange colored rubber boot...I take it that is an FD part.

What type of joint is used; a U-joint or something more elegant?

With the countless threads discussing transmission lubes and shift kits, while on a late afternoon drive earlier, I could not help but think how smooth my transmission and shifter are, which had me wondering what all the talk is about. Even the much talked about notchiness from 1st to 2nd is smooth.

I run Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS 75W-90 and still have my OEM shifter.

I have the FD Motorsports SSK with Golden Rod which uses a modified RS shifter. Very happy with the quality and feel of the shifter, and Mark and Darin are great to deal with. No affiliation, just a happy customer. http://fdmotorsports.net/index_files/Page489.htm

More likely to keep dust and dirt out of the U-joint, and if it is greased, to keep grease in.

I've been looking at the U-joints made by Apex; see page 9 and 19. This way if I ever decide on a SSK, I can make my own using nice SS tubing or maybe even aluminium.

There is a type of joint, sort of like a CV joint (maybe it is one) that could replace the U-joint I was thinking of using. Its more elegant than a crude U-joint...I've seen them, but don't know what they are called. I'm going to check with the mechanical department at work tomorrow.

The Apex site was just an example; I'm looking for other sources that offer metric sizing that will either fit the ID or OD of the shifter rod. The OD of the shifter rod is 20 mm (0.787 inch); I don't know what the ID is, yet. Of course, if I make my own rod, sizing won't be an issue.

As for your noise, a local RLer had the same problem with his FD SSK which the last I heard was being sorted out. There is a reason why I prefer to make my own stuff...it ends up being exactly what I want.

BTW, that Hargett shifter isn't "billet", is it? Never mind. That was an internal joke.

Alex ,no noise from the FD rod just the Hargett shifter.Mark suggested to wrap it with a pice of garden hose and zip tie it to the joint. That did not work. Thanks again.
