I have the Porsche trickle charger that plugs into the cig lighter. I keep the car locked in the garage which means the trickle charger is always running (light on)....is this ok? When the car is unlocked the charger only lights up/turns on as needed.

Well then, something is pulling power, when your doors are locked, and the maintainer is pluged in, with the light on. The light should turn off, after a few minutes or a few hours, depending, regardless if the door is locked or unlocked.

You have a power drain with the doors locked. Something ain't right.

How much time are you giving the maintainer to turn off, when the doors are locked? It may need more time to cycle through, and turn off. For example, I can come back from a 320 mile drive. Pull into the garage, plug in the Porsche maintainer, and it will top off the battery for a several minutes to hours. Both my cars (Turbo and 987S) will do this. Normal.

During winter hibernation, I lock the cars, and the maintainer shuts off.

No winter hibernation here. But when I park it, I lock it and the charger light is off by the next day.

Yes the alarm is drawing current but is this bad to have the charger running constantly? As for this one down here

Ditto. I have the Porsche charger/maintainer and it works this way for me too. After a day or so, the charger has "topped off" the battery and the light goes green. There should be minimal drain, but there is a little. When the battery drops down to (?V), the charger should turn on and top it off again.

I have the same charger and stopped locking the car some time ago. I don't consider it aproblem with the SUV parked in front of the garage.

Only about 25 mA which is a lot less than chargers supply, even in float mode.

All chargers run constantly as they monitor the voltage at the battery when left connected.

The 3 stage chargers take the voltage to a float mode (usually the mid 13V range) after being in the fully charged absorption mode (usually 14.4V) for a few hours.

The 2 stage chargers will shut off after being in the absorption mode for a few hours. They then turn back on after the battery has self drained to about 12.5V.

As a side note, this is why the alarm system on the newer Porsches (997/987....not sure about the 996/986 series) the alarm also goes into "sleep mode" after about 5-7 days of uninteruption. To "wake-up" the alarm and key fob, the door needs to be manually opened with the key, and the key needs to be inserted into the ignition (and turned, does not need to be actually started) within a specific time limit or else the arlam will sound. One way to 'bypass' this feature it to hit your lock button on the key fob every 5 days.
