Odometer and trip meter just quit on me.

Mine went out earlier this year and I read alot of previous posts and it seemed to always be the small 15 tooth gear that failed. Mine had one tooth that had come loose and jammed the gears. I was concerned about the needle removal. I would recommend following the DIY on pcar.com and using a small piece of wood on the opposite side of the needle to minimize flex on the shaft when removing. As far as reinstalling it and getting it close...I put the needle back on and then turned it past the friction point, clockwise, and let it return. Repeat until it bounces back to where it was when you started. In hindsight I would have marked the needle location prior to removing. Checked mine with gps after installation and it was spot on. I can't believe my local speedo shop wanted $200 for this repair.

When I did the colored gauge faces on my Carrera, the kit came with a tool for removing the needle. I looked like small, thin hammer claw for prying up around the shaft. How is that that worked, but the tech article for the 993 fix says not to do that and to turn the needle clockwise? Anyone do it with the tool?

Just did this repair. I bought the $11 gear on eBay, had the speedo out in under a minute and back in the car 40 min. after starting. Just drove her six miles and it works like a charm. Very cheap and satisfying fix.
This was the culprit.

I just want to add a note here...this is not a "difficult" procedure...BUT...it is definitely a delicate procedure. We all know that some people have "big" hands and are simply not good at delicate procedures. IF you are one of these people...do your car a favor, and pay someone to do this.
This procedure over several opportunities to scratch/break things...some of which will be visible EVERY time you look at your speedometer....that would really suck. Another note...be SURE to check the operation BEFORE you put the casing back on the housing...some of the broken gear pieces can get lodged in the gears and cause problems.

Also a great time to install a glass speedometer lens from North Hollywood Speedometer.
It's the only instrument with a plastic lens...

I will be in LA next week and might try to swing by N. Hollywood Speedometer. But I know that could lead to a very expensive project. I love custom gauges. I went to Palo Alto Speedo once and almost couldn't get out of there.

Guys, look carefully at your large gear while replacing small gear. I am now buttoning up a speedometer where the small gear was OK but the large one turned to jelly.
I replaced both gears (odometergears.com $54 shipped for two) as well as installing a new black face ($100 from Germany). This one is going to be for sale, btw. 70,371 miles on it.
