Driving home from picking up my car after the front bumper replacement, I saw the odometer go to 77700 and noticed after another five or so miles it had stopped at 77702, trip meter at 46. I've never ever reset the trip meter while in motion. Speed indicator works fine. Is this an electrical issue or stripped gears?

Why must I change my screen name? The madness all happened back in 2005 when I bought my first 993, an Arena Red/Cashmere Cabriolet. Hence my name Arena 993. From that point on....... pure addiction. or madness ![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

Coincidentally, the same thing happened to me this past weekend. Took the car in to the dealer and had the gears replaced. However, before I picked up the car, the shop called and asked if I had noticed that the speedometer was off by 7-10 mph, trying to blame the error on the 18" MY'02 wheels and tires I had installed.
I told them that the speedo had been spot on since I had the wheels installed 4 years ago. They were somehow able to "fix" or "adjust" the speedometer after they took it to a speedo shop that told them the only way to fix it was to replace the whole unit. I have the car back now and everything seems to be working though I haven't been able to check the speedometer accuracy.

That was a bit shady.
When you replace the odometer gear, you have to take off the speedometer needle. When putting it back on, you have to find your baseline 0mph or yes you will be off. If you have a trip computer that reads MPH and assuming that's correct, you can easily align the needle to the computer MPH.
Before I put the glass back on, I did the this calibration. If not, it's a real pain to take it all back off again.

I was about to post exactly what Tony wrote, but was tired after a race yesterday.
The dealer is full of it. The initial repair shop just didn't line the needle properly to begin with, re-assembled the unit and were too lazy to re-do it.

Is the one gear the only part I need? And how hard is it to get the needle off and back on? I did colored gauge faces on my Carrera long ago and that was a project. I can always use my GPS to measure speed, but don't know how I'd calibrate the speedo that way. Are their splines on the shaft for the needle to go onto? And how do you know where 0 mph is?

There are plenty of detailed DIY with pictures on this subject. In short, there are two gears, both can go bad but only one usually does. And there are no splines on the needle shaft. It spins on the shaft. You calibrate by moving the needle clockwise or counterclockwise past the friction point to position it properly to indicate the right speed (GPS help a lot in this).

But it's not falsifying mileage if I make it more accurate. Right now I'm about 20 miles short. If I keep driving until I fix this, I'll be that much more off.

I always thought there was some type of "seal" placed/replaced on the speedometer to expose any unofficial tampering with the odometer. That is why I took the car to the dealer although I considered a speedo shop since the gauges are stock VDOs, aren't they? It probably would have been cheaper, but I didn't know any reputable shops.
