Default Help - Premature Pilot Bearing Failure

xpost from the racing forum....

Not really model specific, as its 996gt3r flywheel/Tilton clutch in a 993… so hoping someone here has some insight.

I installed this setup last winter (4 or 5 de weekends ago). I haven’t dug into it fully yet but it seems the pilot bearing failed (makes a god awful rack whenever the clutch is disengaged). This would be the last thing I expect to fail….

Could I have installed it wrong? I was very careful not to beat it up when mating the motor and trans, but I guess anything is possible.

Thinking this was an inconsequential, low wear part I ordered a stock unit from Pelican (don’t have the part number handy)… Is there a better bearing available?

Any advise so I don’t have to do this a third time?

Child's play. Let's pull the tranny October 1 and we'll still have time for festivities later.

I'm not familiar with with Porsche pilot bearings, but if it's the solid bushing type, make sure the new one is well lubricated. Some solid bushings are made out of a porous bronze or iron which needs to have the lubricant forced into it at high pressure.

If it's a roller or needle bearing, you might want to check the transaxle's input shaft bearing to make sure the input shaft isn't moving around.

You'll have to do a test drive afterwards won't you?

So, you really coming to town? I had planned on wrapping this up in the next couple of weekends, but may try to time it when you are here.... At least let you have a look at the existing pieces, to get your impression.... I really don’t want to do this again anytime soon.

Ill have plenty of beer.... Do you think the wives will mind if we skip the baby shower to work in the garage? (inside scoop: his sister is my next door neighbor/good friend.... it is really small world).....

The last pilot bearing I installed was undersized on the OD and just slipped into the flywheel bore. I wonder how long it would have lasted had I just let it go.
