why did you purchase a 993 vs a 964?

The 964 and 993 are both great models in terms of reliability and performance on the roads, auto-X and on the track.
From this writers biased standpoint....the 993 has a perfect balance from the aesthetics to driving performance.

I chose the 993 because it was the full evolution of the aircooled model, and as such had principally eliminated problems with earlier models. Its also a fantastic looking car.
That said, I look at the 964 and in some ways appreciate its rougher edge, and perhaps would like a 964 (965 would be nice) as well, or even instead.
The more upright lights on the 964 look great, and its a great.
On balance, $ for $ I would consider getting a great condition late model 964.
There is no doubt the 964 is also a classic.

I remember seeing a 993 for the first time in 1995. I drooled. My lovely wife purchased my 1996 Red Carrera 2 pre-loved in 1997 for my 42nd birthday. Such a surprise. My jaw dropped. I said, "Do you know what this costs? We need to talk about this." Well, eventually I gave in to the inevitable. I still own the car today with 47k miles. I will never sell it.

after a 68 912, 80 911 Targa, I wanted something a little more civilized. i.e. AC and less wind noise.
the 964 was great candidate, but the 993 had many mechanical improvements, not to mention the body styling. 996 was out of the question as I simply do not like it's lines.

Strong recommendations from 3 indy Porsche mechanics I trusted led me to focus on the 993. The superior AC was a critical part of the final decision as well. Also, just dumb luck. I love my car and may get another in the future. A nb coupe probably.

To each his own as they say but much prefer the bumpers, front end, on the 993. More power, better AC, improved suspension, cool Varioram intake... Best of the air cooled - visually, performance, refinment.

I used to detest the looks of the 964. It did grow on me, but it doesn't look as good as an 80's Carrera. Mechanically, the 993 is a big move forward from the 964, and it looks pretty damned good. Look to the left...
