I think a wood ball would be cool, but something would have to be done about the rod itself, if it were to be exposed. IMO, it should be cylindrical and polished/chrome, but that's just my two cents.
The late 996 **** looks really perfect in a 993. And it's made of real aluminum, unlike the 993RS plastic ****, which feels light and flimsy. I found one on ebay for $250 and had a local leather guy re-work the boot to fit it.

The feel is nice. good weight, good leather feel. thicker. cant quite hook your fingers around it like the factory one, and its a little taller, so it hits my leg some times ( Im 6 ft 3" )
of course I didnt hook up the LED, and I only paid $45.
Mark
This is a great ****, been using mine for over a year now, it's held up well. You should try hooking up the LED, works perfect, and dims properly with the dash lights.

I could totally see that in the car, it would be nice looking, if only the rod itself was nice looking enough to be exposed. Actually, I was thinking something more along the lines of this:

This is the one I used on mine as well. It looks and feels fantastic! Way nicer than the beaten up old leather one. Mine was carbon.
The part number on the box is: 000 044 700 14 8YR. Figured I better post tonight, not sure if I'll be able to get online tomorrow. An unwanted guest (Irene) is supposed pay a visit.

if anybody is getting rid of/ replacing of an old shift ****, can I get the metal ring part out of the bottom of the leather that snaps into the center console? I need one.. I'll buy it!!
