Default Damaged heat exchanger

In a moment of sheer brilliance, I backed up too far onto a parking space cement wheel stop. Thought I'd just caught the bottom of the muffler only. Didn't know I had actually knocked loose my right rear heat exchanger until it was too late. Was able to reconnect what was left of it where it meets the red rubber tubing, but part of it where it (used to) curve downward and had the little internal movable flap is no more. What does that flap do, why, and how critical is it to replace the part before, say, the worn axle boots I'm about to install? Any inherent risks to the motor etc I should be aware of? And where might I find a replacement for a reasonable price? Just brilliant!

This is one of the little talked about downsides to running without an engine tray, alas. Ask me how I know.

As I recall, you're not risking any engine damage, but I don't think you can/should use the heater until you get it fixed. Those flapper boxes aren't a cheap part; I found one used on here for $100 though.

Best of luck to you with this. Hopefully, smarter folks than I will chime in...

Thanks guys.

So whats that little flapper DO exactly? And why shouldn't I run the heat with it effed up as such?

Also, anyone in So Cal have one of these buggers they want to sell?

Thanks Tommy but PA seems a long way to go to source one.

Whats with my Porsche repair manual? Can't find details on how that part is connected other than the end that meets the rubber hose / clamp that I saw looking underneath the car. What are the two holes at the top of the box for? Screws or what? Wondering if I need more hardware besides the box itself.

He will ship no problem, or check LA Dismantelers.

My understanding is this:

The flaps prevent exhaust gases from entering the heating system while reversing.

the flapper boxes are just held in place by the hoses

I think the reason not to use the heater is to make sure you're not blowing exhaust/CO into the passenger compartment. You most likely aren't but it would be smart to make sure before you use the heater.

FleaBay has a bunch. SoCal local (ok, local to me, not you...) example at Autobahn in San Diego:

No affiliation, other than knowing that Sean at Autobahn is also SD region PCAer.
