Interesting excellence article on OEM silver hood crests...
The new excellence states that in 1999 the 996 c4 was released with silver hood crests. Wasn't the general consensus that porsche AG never released a silver crest? Not trying to start another war here... But more curious than anything. I definately did a double take when I was reading the article.

I think you will find this is a "Fail".
The Mellinium edition (2000) may have been fitted with a silver crest on the airbag steering wheel from memory...

Like BlueTTop says, what page number? All I see is this: "In the spring of 1999, the Carrera 4 was introduced. Available in both coupe and convertible form, its appearance was identical to that of the Carrera save silver badges, silver brake calipers, and different 17-inch wheels."
They said "silver badges" and not "silver hood crests."

I was referring to this article... and you have a VERY good point about them just saying badges and not hood badges. Some of the earlier text in the article was referring to the front changes of the car and i guess was still thinking about the front crests of the car.

Taken directly from an email I received last year from Jeff Clark at Sunset Porsche:
Andreas
I've been asked this before and heard from somebody that a Porsche was made with a silver crest. Silver crests were aftermarket, all the Porsche cars come from the factory with the gold crests we all know and love. We even sold the silver ones for a short time but since they are aftermarket the silver flaked off. Due to improper installation or faulty quality.
I've been doing this 10 years, not a lot by some parts guys history, but never seen any p/n offered in PET that was silver, always gold, and of those 3-4 p/n's offered things were different like the tint of the gold, the red, and if Porsche was in black or gold on the very top.

Porsche never used silver hood crests during production.

Here is a picture of the used Silver Crest sold to me (as if new) by Bumperplugs.com:
These are all OE crests which have been re-plated silver.

Silver - 901.559.210.20/Gold 901.552210.20 interesting.... but the backs are different. Gold is smooth finish, the silver is the reverse inpression of the front. Can't remember where I picked either of them up at. Too long ago.

We've been through this so many times before. As Andreas says (and the world will agree) they are all Porsche parts with real Porsche part numbers. Some have been turned into silver badges and sold aftermarket, is all.
End of story.
Until it gets revived again next year.
