Yes I drive it annually.
Like others have said, these cars are best driven regularly but I'm on my fourth year of storage will no visibile ill effects at this point. Good luck with the move.

Default 48 Month Checkpoint

Battery is still strong and will live another year (Car is on a battery maintainer and I was expecting the battery might have finally given up this year but no! ... :-) )
No oil leaks. No rodents. No damp.

Starting - Prior to starting I cranked without the DME to get oil pressure. Car then started up like a champ.

Mileage 42,200.

Tyres are pretty much shot at this point and will be replaced when the car is out back on the road.

The oil was changed 24 months ago. Worth changing after basically nil miles?

Glad to see there are others who don't want to sell I also have cars in long-term storage, this includes a 993. So far it has been for 3 years but the timeframe ahead is pretty long. I have the cars at an OPC storage facility. As this is northern Europe the climate is also pretty good with a farily constant (low) temperature and humidity. I get the cars serviced annually, and have even replaced tyres. I know, but it just feels so good the 2-3 days per year I get to drive it, knowing that everything is in top shape. So far so good.

5 Year / 60 Month Update
Car has now been in storage for 5 years (read the thread for reasons as to why etc.)
42,400 miles.
Battery on ctek maintainer and still strong
Car started immediately (as if just run).
Car serviced and engine oil changed.
No apparent issues at this point noted from the extended storage.
Next update at 6 years.

Which fluids do you change once you take the car out of storage? I got back from hk last week and changed oil and brake fluid. Not looking forward to putting it in storage again next week. Thanks

I change oil every 1-2 years.
Brake fluid every 2-3.
It's stored with 98 octane (non-ethanol) petrol which is also treated with large amounts of stabiliser.
Petrol is also drained and replaced every 2 years as its not consumed as you would with normal usage.

Long term storage isn't a good idea for an air cooled car, but in my case the only other choice was selling it, and that's not going to happen.

I'd like to revive this thread from the dead and get an update from the OP on how things went. How long was it stored in total, what it needed to be back on the road, etc?

I have a car at my home overseas that's going on 6 years in storage. I had been starting it every year, draining the fuel every 2 years, doing stab-bil, etc. But due to covid, when I get back in July it will have been 2.5 years since I last started it.

Well it’s been 13+ years … and counting.

I start the car annually and it runs like a champ (starts up like the day it left the factory) and has no apparent degradation.

I’m on the same CTEK charger and I’ve changed the 12v battery once.

Humidity is something that has caused mould but I’m on top of that.

I never imagined I’d be away for this long but truly look forward to getting this car properly back on the road one day when I return to Europe.

The car is 42k miles and still in amazing condition. Difficult to find a car in this condition now I think.

If you don’t know the reason it’s in storage read the thread.

Strangely no mould this year. Perhaps was drier, but that’s good. Clean as a whistle inside.

There were extended power cuts here during the last 12 months, and thankfully the CTEK kicked back in by itself and the battery was in perfect state when I checked it.

Cranked the car without the DME to get the oil moving and pressure up. Not all in one go of course.

Gently put the DME back in, and started up like it was just out yesterday.

So glad I didn’t sell this 14 years ago.
