What was included in the m495 package?

M495 package for a 1998 carrera 2s , what was included under the m495 code? How many were made in 1998?

ilko 06-24-2011 09:19 PM

M495 means "Carrera S" and several thousand were made for MY98 IIRC.

ilko 06-24-2011 09:37 PM

Do a search.

I think there were 993 1998 C2S made for the US.

The 4S got the big reds, the 2S did not. Tests have shown virtually identical stopping distance but the reds are less prone to fading with track usage.

The 4S also got a slightly different suspension but almost everyone swaps the suspension out if it is still stock.

Both models got the turbo (wide) body.

You will get answers in this thread but the differences have been listed many times in previous threads so you might get your answers faster by searching.

"Hate" is a strong word, you won't get far that way. Apparently you didn't search well enough:

I have searched for the actual "factory listing of features" for the m495 option code for the 2s.

Have not found it yet on any forum or web search...

ilko 06-24-2011 10:02 PM

You're still stuck on the option code?? It means nothing other than Carrera S. It's the model designation. Just like M491 means Carrera 4S and M493 means it's a narrow body car.

ro9beam2002 06-24-2011 10:06 PM

that option code includes a list of features "package"

ro9beam2002 06-24-2011 10:14 PM

ilko, example....i have a truck, it has a option code z71... the code is z71...

the list of features for a z71 under that option code... different shocks, sticker, skid plates, axle ratio 3.73 gear, offroad tires... it's a offroad package....

it's an option code z71, with a list of features that's included when you select that option....

just like the carrera s is basically a "tubo look package", i want to know what is included under the carrera s package for a 2s

PNogC2S 06-24-2011 10:18 PM

Generally speaking the Carrera S specs out as follows:
- 1997 & 1998 model years only (coupe only, except for five made by/for Bev. Hills Porsche)
- Same basic running gear as the 1996 & later narrow bodied cars (brakes, drivetrain, engine, HP, gearing, etc)
- Wide body (like the turbo & 4s but w/o the big reds or all-wheel drive)
- Split spoiler grill
- Standard was supposed to be 17" wheels, but almost all I've seen in US were optioned with 18" hollow spoke turbo-twist wheels
- Interior had special dark silver gearshift knob, e-brake handle and trim rings around the guages
- Interior also has special charcoal grey inserts in dash the area below the door tops (sorry, hard to describe exactly)
- Tach says "Carrera S" in the lower center area and has "Carrera S" badging on rear deck
- AFAIK all the other options could be ordered the same as any narrow body - nothing else unique to the S...
- I think the "S" was the only widebody car you could order a Tiptronic - 4S & Turbo were manual only.

Cool, thanks pnog..

I assume the aero package would have included the tail, to complete the turbo look.

I did notice the tach and badging.

No gearing differences that you know of? I thought i heard somewhere of a slightly different gear set...

ro9beam2002 06-24-2011 10:29 PM

Was the motorsound option included under the s package?

DC from Cape Cod 06-24-2011 10:35 PM

Motorsound was separate...and I think the factory installed aerokit was actually 2 options...one for the tail and one for the rest but I could be wrong, I haven't looked up the codes in a while.

Same G50-20 transmission as ALL US/Canadian sold normally aspirated 993s. The "different gear set" you're referencing is most likely the G50-21 gearbox that was standard on ROW 993s until mid 1996. After that, all 993s were G50-20 equipped.

Of course there were also other G50 variants for Turbo, RS, RS/CS, GT2 etc.

Motorsound was optional.

It might be best to post a picture of the option decal on the underside of your hood to find EXACTLY how your car was equipped.

ro9beam2002 06-24-2011 10:43 PM

I am in the market for a 993/ maybe turbo version. It helps when looking, knowing what is included under the s package for "options i want"...

When looking at most s's , i see the motor/sound option on all of them so far. I figured it was automatically optioned in under the s package.... i use a vin decoder that shows the options
