Maybe he was referring to the 993 airbag not fitting the 996 steering wheel

I use Rennweke in Westchester ny. He is really good usually. I have a 996 steering wheel with airbag that looks exactly like the stock 993 wheel. I want to change because the previous owner picked at the stitching around 1 o'clock on my current wheel and it looks terrible. I don't feel like laying out a lot of money to fix or replace with the nicer 3 spoke wheel right now. My 996 wheel is perfect and is from a 99.

A 993 steering wheel is 4 spoke; a 996 steering wheel is 3 spoke. Not sure what you mean when you say the two look exactly alike.

in 1999 the OE in the 996 on the early build cars was a 4 spoke wheel - same as the 993 OE. If you remember, a lot of the early cars also had orange turn signals on the front and rear and 18" wheels were an option too. so essentially the wheel from my 99 996 looks exactly the same as the 993 OE but I wasn't sure if it fit.

What rd says is correct. A lot of the early boxters and early 996 cars had 4-spoke steering wheels that looks just like the 993 4-spoker. I'm not sure if a 996 4-spoke wheel will fit on the 993 so your indy might be right...

I now have the second 3-spoker in my car and I installed them both myself. It's and easy and very tasteful mod.

Just sold my first 3-spolker for $600--and gave the guy a smokin' deal!! He loves it!!

Cheech is a good guy and Rennwerke is an excellent shop. I wouldn't switch shops over that.
