Doing a road trip in my new to me 993.

Anybody know the laws in the following states in regards to my valentine 1?

Just an advisory...on my drive home to Eastern Ontario from Costa Mesa Ca. last month I had my new Escort up and running the full 6 days. Only once did it give me 'fair' warning of a possible encounter with a LEO. Every other time it was either 'instant on' Ka or laser. In both cases all it did was tell me that if I had of been speeding, to pull over to get my ticket.

Very few troopers drive with the radar in active mode, gives too much warning to oncoming traffic. They just troll and ping. Plus when they do have it in active, if it is hilly country and you meet at the crest, guess what, your screwed.

Got a real heart stopper in Iowa when I met an unmarked Chev Blazer just over a ridge and the radar went full bar...I had been doing well in excess of the posted limit on the previously deserted 2 lane country blacktop, just a little burst of enthusiasm, and had just let up to about 10-15 over...he turned on the top rack briefly but kept going. Nuff said, I was a good boy for a long time after :-).

All of the above is exactly why radar detectors are worthless. Instant on radar/lidar. Radar detectors just let you know that they just got you....

Got the Escort 9500ix for the PCar.. have it hardwired way up high in the center front glass between the sun visors above the mirror... I use it more for the redlight cam and speedtrap GPS notification. It is usefull around here for radar too. There are SO many cars speeding down the highway here you are NEVER alone and instant on to them is kinda useless. The dont usually use the instant on with so many cars around. It's a numbers game here and EVERYONE knows it. Safety in numbers. just dont be FOOLISH and your odds go way down. I have seen packs of cars doing 15 over and nobody getting pulled out of the crowd with radar detector blaring away. Make sure your in the middle of the pack and not an easy target. Be careful if you somehow manage to get on a road here by yourself then you could have a problem.

In California, the Highway Patrol typically leave their fixed radar units on all the time, giving you ample warning. Used my V1 on a cross country trip last year, and it saved my butt several times. All it takes is one save to pay for the unit!

Downloaded speed trap warning database into the Garmin, which gives some false alerts, but that is better than nothing.

In New York State the troopers and local LE always have their radar units activated . Thruway, back roads, I always get a signal with the Escort.

You will be fine in NYS if you keep it reasonable.

Funny, mine have saved me a bunch of times. Are they perfect? No, but it doesn't take much familiarity to know how to read them and they will save you.

If you are the only one on the highway and they are after you then yes, you will be caught. But they're going to hit a few in front of you and that's where you benefit.

Im not trying to be argumentative. But how can you know it saved you if there were other cars around? You were probably in the 85% of the 85/15 rule. Generally, cops will pull over the fastest 15% and let the 85% go by, no matter the speed.
For me, and that's what I should have said above, they are useless as I would only need the warning when there weren't other cars around. In Florida, instant-on radar and lidar is the only thing in use. I used a Passport 7500 for years and noticed that it would only go off after the cop was in sight. It's in a drawer now. I find it's easier to just drive at the 84% speed (80-85MPH around Tampa) and keep my eyes open.
The last ticket I got was by an airplane....Now when they come out with the "aircraft with stopwatch" detector, I'm buyin'.

What's the point of going super fast on the highway? I keep pretty much within the flow of traffic (usually ~10MPH over the limit) and get my thrills on the on-ramps, off-ramps and occasional low-speed curves.

Same in Colorado. Local cops, CHP, all of them usually leave the radar on when on patrol.

My detector has paid for itself at least 5 times and I would not be without one.

Well personally I don't want to be in the bunch with the rest of the traffic. I learned from my motorcycle riding days to ride in the "pockets" not in the crowds. Jut did a round trip up to Louisville on Sat., I-65 all the way, other than being caught behind more than a few left lane hogs I was running about 85 the whole way. To be honest, there weren't that many LEO's on the route but there were enough and the V1 warned me about them (I love that thing!).

You may not want one but mine has paid for itself many times over (for me).
