Put me firmly in the camp of drivers whose radar detector (V1) has saved them innumerable times, even with laser. You have to be smart about when you speed, but it can be instrumental if you don't want to putter around at 65 mph. I bought my first one in 1998 and had it stolen two years ago. I promptly replaced it with a new V1. Knock on wood, I have not had a speeding ticket in probably nine years, have had zero points on my license for thirteen and have not had an accident for over sixteen years, yet it is rare that I drive the speed limit/stick with the pack. I firmly attribute this to prudent speeding and my trusty V1, and am well aware that the device is not a panacea for avoiding police officers.

Got the Escort 9500ix for the PCar.. have it hardwired way up high in the center front glass between the sun visors above the mirror... I use it more for the redlight cam and speedtrap GPS notification. It is usefull around here for radar too. There are SO many cars speeding down the highway here you are NEVER alone and instant on to them is kinda useless. The dont usually use the instant on with so many cars around. It's a numbers game here and EVERYONE knows it. Safety in numbers. just dont be FOOLISH and your odds go way down. I have seen packs of cars doing 15 over and nobody getting pulled out of the crowd with radar detector blaring away. Make sure your in the middle of the pack and not an easy target. Be careful if you somehow manage to get on a road here by yourself then you could have a problem.

We do lots of miles on I-80 every year between the Rockies and the Midwest. V-1 has saved me thousands. If there is any traffic at all, you'll get ample warning as they light up the cars well ahead of you.

V-1 definitely saved me on many occasions however you must always be alert to parked trucks, cars, and motorcycle parked along the shoulder. Here in Washington State there are aircraft patrols with officers armed with a stop watch and a radio to ground troops, even on cloudy days!

My detectors have saved me dozens of tickets over the years. There's usually a scout, or scouts, you can follow, at an appropriate distance.
On flat terrain, my Escort 8500 will pick up radar that is many minutes away.

Bottomline is that speeding was not worth the hassle and I am never going faster again than 5 mph over the limit. If I want to let the car fly and enjoy it safely, I go to the next race track. This is a hard way of learning but I thought it was worth sharing.

Maybe someone who knows about the equipment that the LEOs use but I believe the new stuff can tell when you have a detector and if they catch you, you're considered a "player" and will almost certainly be getting a ticket. Just sayin'.

Someone would have to explain the physics of such a system to me. The radar detectors I've heard of are receivers only...

my V-1 sniffed out a highway tahoe in a median today..... new york.... 
not that im speeding but i do tend to travel at a brisk pace in 6th gear which can allow oneself to drift past the limit by 10 miles per hour or so.... The detector allows me to regroup and check my speed like a friendly tap on the shoulder

Forgive me any errors, it's been many many years since I studied this stuff and worked on radar systems but here goes. Radar detectors work in a frequency range, they have mini transmitter built in to let them what freqs to scan for. Much the same as a transistor radio that use a "crystal" the detector is a very, very mini transmitter. Your better radar detectors are shielded so the signal doesn't "escape" as it does on a cheaper unit. It's why sometimes my detectors will light up when another car goes by me even though there's no cop around, it's because it's picking up the signal produced by the cheap radar detector in the other car.
Maybe LTC will chime in and provide more technical info for us?

FYI, radar detectors do emit low radar signals, and it's these signals that are discernible by the detector detectors.
