I think I need to take a trip to Germany so that I can properly 'try' them out We were in Italy and a Ferrari went past us like we weren't even there If I understand you correctly, a 993 is raw power and a 997 is power with champagne

We can talk about how great the 993 experience is until we are blue in the face, but the real question is: why do you want a Porsche 993 or 997? What do you expect to get out of driving it? Each board, 993 or 997 will give you their thoughts, some biased, some balanced. In the end though it is your expectations that matter.
The 997 is the latest iteration of the 911, it is bigger, faster, more refined, but some of us feel it has lost some of the intimacy that comes with the earlier generation air-cooled cars. I'm on my 9th 911, have had two 996s and spent some time in my friends 996 turbo, and the 996/997 versions felt sort of big and sterile. Very fast, just not nearly as involving. More like a very fast luxury car than an involving sports car. Ever driven a Miata? They are not fast or luxurious, but they sure are involving and fun. (Not saying the 993 is a Miata, just trying to give perspective.)
I keep coming back to the 993. It is more car than I am capable of using on the street, it is a good investment, and it is in my mind absolutely gorgeous.

A 993 is a go-cart...a 997 is a Hyundai.
The 997 is faster, more comfortable and performs better....but the 993 is more fun to drive.

When the 993 came out it was described as "too soft, too easy to drive, not raw, etc, etc..." Now we hear that when comparing it with a 997...Some things never change. hands down, the 997 is the better all around car, just as the 993 was better than the 964, and so on.

It may be faster and more comfortable but there are a number of things it is not better at.

997 is better in almost every way. If you can afford it, it's a no-brainer.
OTOH, if you like you work on your car and appreciate the classic German-ness of the 911, then the 993 is great.
Really, these cars are just totally different. 993 is a racecar turned into a street car. 997 is a great, fast street car.

Karen, tell us about YOU so our little group can sterotype you better! Do you own a dog? What breed? What about your taste in music? Do you like to shift gears yourself or do you think the PDK is really a luxury to have? We need to know your profile.

Btw, the 993 may be more fun for YOU to drive, but that is entirely subjective.

I happen to like the 997 and the comparison was meant to show how much further along it is on the development timeline than something like a 993 which I likened to a go-cart.
A go-cart is very basic with minimal comfort items. The Hyundai has far more advanced systems, is much faster, safer, more comfortable and generally quite a few technological levels ahead/above the go cart. A new Hyundai is roughly twice the cost of a high quality used go-cart...hence my analogy. Comparing a go-cart to a Rolls Royce would not have been as accurate....besides, have you seen a new Hyundai? They are actually really nice cars these days.
The 993 is better looking (subjective), better made, uses better materials, have a more visceral (go cart like) ride and has a high re-sale value.
Like I said, I like the 997 and would buy one in a second over a 993 for a daily driver. If I had wanted to insult a water cooled Porsche I would have chosen the 996 which is a giant pile of plastic shiit.
P.S. - I would also buy a Hyundai too.
