Default 993 vs 997

I am hearing a lot of good things about the 993. Why should I buy it instead of a 997?

Go & drive a few, see if you "get it".

If you want a car that performs well and coddles you with things like cup holders, navigation and lots of electronic gizmos so you don't get yourself into trouble, the 997 is your car. it's a great GT and very luxurious.

If driving's the thing you're after, and you don't need electronic babysitters to help you out; if you want a less refined and more visceral experience in a better looking and more raw car that makes you feel more connected to the car while driving, and harkens back to the days where Porsche made sports cars, then the 993 will provide you with a more thrilling ride.

Both are fine cars. One is just more fun than the other.

993 is a car that you could established a communication with and you feel the car is alive while 997 is more then you playing with those electronics stuff and let them drive for you.

Air/oil cooled vs. Watercooled. With a 996 and later 997, you don't get the same scent of the leather interior and motor oil that is synonymous of the vintage Porsche lineage up to the 993 along with the ride and driving characteristics.

I think this is the best response. If you don't 'get it', then go 997.

I agree with Mike S, and I'll add this...

Would you rather:

a) drive 100 mph, but feel like you're going 60 mph
or
b) drive 60 mph, but feel like you're going 100 mph?

If your answer is "a," go with a 997. If your answer is "b," go with a 993.

+1! This of course exludes the "GT" designations of the 996/997 series, which I believe pay homage to the pre-996 lineage... As a DD, the 997 would be more compliant, but as a fun weekend car, the 993 is no camparison... Older Porsches have all the soul...

Spot on. I use to break the law everytime I put the key in my 993. There is no such thing as a spirted drive in a 997. Sans GT3 or GT2.
