?anyone have experience taking mirrors off the doors?

There is an allen "bolt" on the window side of the mirror, at the base near the door frame, loosen the allen about 7 - 8 turns (until the mirror is loose) and then wiggle the mirror assy free. I think the allen is kind of a hook that holds the mirror body to the attachment bracket on the door skin. Did it about a year ago to replace the trim gaskets.
There is a plug in the wiring that comes through the door so you can remove the mirrors completely.

It's amazing to me that this sort of thing isn't anywhere in the factory service manuals

Same on both sides on my 993's. Yes, they can be tightened up. Think of the mount like a very expensive home towel rack or toilet paper wall mount.

Hmm. Always thought that I'd have to tighten the mirror by taking off the door panels. After driving around with slightly loose mirrors for the past 6 years, I took a look this morning and, with a 4mm allen wrench, got both sides tightened back up in under a minute. Is this a great place or what?

^^ Yes ... be careful when tightening those little allen heads, the door skins are thin and can be malformed by the 'hook' if you torque them too much. And no, I didn't do that (although, I'm certainly capable of it ...) I saw it on another car in a body shop. Ooops.

Quite sad considering both the Honda and Toyota manuals were well under $200.
