There is an allen "bolt" on the window side of the mirror, at the base near the door frame, loosen the allen about 7 - 8 turns (until the mirror is loose) and then wiggle the mirror assy free. I think the allen is kind of a hook that holds the mirror body to the attachment bracket on the door skin. Did it about a year ago to replace the trim gaskets.

There is a plug in the wiring that comes through the door so you can remove the mirrors completely.

Once, unintended, backing out of the garage.

They are designed to bend both ways, and I didn't rip it all the way off. Wrenched it back in place and all was fine.

Thanks!, I was hoping that was it. Gotta get them off for painting

It's amazing to me that this sort of thing isn't anywhere in the factory service manuals

So you are going to paint them orange as suggested in the wheel thread?

Is this the same on both sides...? I can see the allen head on drivers mirror, but there appears to be some sort of rubber cap on the bolt on the pass side. My pass mirror has just a little bobble, nothing you see while driving-but when moved by hand.

thanks

Same on both sides on my 993's. Yes, they can be tightened up. Think of the mount like a very expensive home towel rack or toilet paper wall mount.

Hmm. Always thought that I'd have to tighten the mirror by taking off the door panels. After driving around with slightly loose mirrors for the past 6 years, I took a look this morning and, with a 4mm allen wrench, got both sides tightened back up in under a minute. Is this a great place or what?

^^ Yes ... be careful when tightening those little allen heads, the door skins are thin and can be malformed by the 'hook' if you torque them too much. And no, I didn't do that (although, I'm certainly capable of it ...) I saw it on another car in a body shop. Ooops.

I learned this from Mike (ArenaRed993). He of the Rivi Blue Cab (NOT an Arena Red one).

Question

How do you get the little rubber plug out of the 4mm opening?
Thx!

On a scale of 1 to 10, my Honda and Toyota factory service manuals rate a 10; the Porsche manual rates a 5. The Ford (we all make mistakes) manuals I once had...a 2.

Quite sad considering both the Honda and Toyota manuals were well under $200.
