I guess I can't keep the California plate on the new car forever...it would be nice if for no other reason than to avoid having to mount a front plate as req'd here in Ontario...

But since the 'plate is in the mail', and the mounting seems inevitable, I'm wondering what creative options others who have had to stick a big rectangular piece of tin on the front on that beautiful smooth nose piece have come up with?

The car came to me with no provision for a front plate, i.e. just a couple of body color hole plugs, with nothing behind them so mounting a bracket of sorts could be a challenge. Looks pretty difficult to get in behind the bumper cover to thread a nut onto a bolt...

I have spoken to a local sign maker and she assures me she can make an exact replica of my front plate in vinyl which I could apply to the front bumper area, but after calling her husband, ( local Provincial Police Superintendent ), to see what his impression might be...she was less than reassuring that it would pass muster with the local LEO's.

Aside from that I guess I have to find some way to mount this disgusting tax grab to the front of my lovely car...

Any ideas? Besides moving to Quebec

The factory bracket and mounting parts is about $30 The fasteners expand in the holes behind the bumper plugs causing no permanent damage.. You could also bend the plate to follow the contour of the front end and fasten it anywhere on the front end with sheetmetal screws pop rivets etc HAHA . Seriously ,what about in the centre of the grill held with zip ties. Air enters left and right for the AC and oil cooler but nothing is behind the middle of the lower grill And if an escort redline in your sig line is a radar detector They are still illegal in Ont.

Thanks John, I neve would have guessed that little for the factory kit...have to check into that next trip to Montreal. But being a fan of the KISS system the 'zip ties' sounds like a plan for the short term. Still curious how the 'vinyl' plate will work. They are legal, as in tolerated I suppose, on other plated vehicles in the province, like snowmobiles...so why not cars? I can guess the answer, 'just because', but worth a try. Especially since I will have the tin version in the front boot, just in case.

I think radar detectors have been illegal in Ontario since cars were invented. But then so has speeding, and everyone does it. If you don't you will eventually be killed or injured...from behind. The red line is undetectable. I know, see previous post, " called her husband"...they are good friends. Driving those long quiet straights where the posted is 80kph, at night, doing 105, headlights coming from a lonnng way off...I like to know if I should ease up on the foot feed or not :-).

Jim,
Someone makes a front plate mount which goes in the tow-hook hole behind the large plug. It does mount the plate off towards the passenger side rather than on center.

I don't need a front plate but think I'd do this type of mount if (when) one is required.

Do a search or maybe someone can point you towards it.

Have you changed the headlight switch bulb yet?

Rennline has the tow-hook mount. I put them on my cars after I paid $200 in parking tickets

We require front plates in Colorado, but I've been driving various Porsches for 12 years without any front plates and I've only been pulled over once for it, and all I got was a warning. Even the cops who lasered me from the front and gave me a ticket never said a word about the missing front plate.

I sandwhiched mine between the bumpercover, and the lower grill. It required cutting off four(two top, two bottom) retaining clips for the lower grill, I used a small dremel tool. I didn't want to trim the plate to fit the space-since altering/modifying the plate is also "illegal".

I've put over 1000 miles on the car since installed, with no movement. Nothing but the "squeeze" from the grill holding it in place.

Yes, the bumper cover does have to come off to install like this...but that is very easy.

The above post with the yellow plate would be my choice if I didn,t purchase the stock mount bracket. Fold the plate to fit and zip tie it to the grill would work for me.

this is my install. I got 2 nylon inserts to put screws into those square holes.
drilled 2 small holes directly through the plate to align with those hole.

then, applied electrical tape to the back of the plate and around the edges as a frame, and cushioning for the back.

I bent the plate a little to follow the curve of the lower front bumper so it didn't stick out so much.

nylon inserts can be found at most hardware stores, I think they are like 0.30.
