Spoiler drive gear repair...
Just tried the newly rebuilt spoiler drive gear using the 'manual' control, and amazingly enough...it went up, and then it went down. NO GRINDING!
And if there was ever any doubt where the noise was coming from this picture proves it was in fact the drive gear...specfically the 'unsealed' bearing the factory stuck in there! YUCK! Its a wonder it ran at all...
Just a note to those who are thinking of attempting this little DIY project, its not too bad, but I had a heck of a time cutting into the gear box casing. Used a number of razor cutter ( box cutter ) blades in an attempt to 'not cut to far in' as the 'p-car' DIY site suggests. No luck, pretty much mangled it getting it open but despite that it all went back together pretty well. Clamped it for 12 hrs to allow the glue to cure and re-installed it this evening. Nice and quiet. We'll see how long my 'glue job' holds.
Oh one other point, the little 'ball' that the end,( opposite the cable end ), of the worm gear fits into, WILL slide off when you least expect it, and roll under the nearest car, and in my case, pause briefly before dropping into the floor drain. I had visions of a $500.00 bill for a new drive gear as I fished with a magnetic probe...but lucky me, found it .
