Mike-
Yes, here we go again! Sorry to bore you with the "same old stuff". I did not know the redundancy police were watching.
Yes, I did an extensive search before posting. It is a habit I have used for close to 40 years in my profession. You are the first to call me on the "search and then question" approach. Thank you for your valuable lesson.
I have spoken with many Porsche factory trained mechanics, including those in Stuttgart and Zuffenhausen and it seems that they use 5W/50 on cars they attend to; so I use it.
My 993 will be 17 yo in June (built in 1994). In that time, I have had to add a total of six quarts between oil changes. It does not smoke on start up or heavy acceleration. Its belly is bone dry. It hauls and accelerates exceedingly well.
But I must be using the wrong oil. Thank you for your advice.

I just feel more comfortable with an oil that has a higher ZDDP content based on what I've read and heard. If there are a lot of people out there who run M1 5W-50 with no issues, I may use it too. Unfortunately, availability of this oil is limited in the US and I haven't seen too many reports of people using it in their 993s. I'm glad to hear that your engine runs great after all these years.
Off soapbox now..... Well, back to your original question. This place came right up on Google:

Their site says they will usually ship the next day. Have you checked these guys already?

Freeman,
Make sure this is the oil you've been using before buying it. Looking at your previous posts on Rennlist, you said you'd used Mobil 1 15W-50 as well as Amsoil 5W-40.

Sorry for the sarcasm. It seems that some on this board do not tolerate those of us who still drive on the learning curve. Thanks for the input. Unfortunately, I will continue to do so.
I have found 6/case at $40.00/

Change your oil at least yearly, regardless of miles.
Read more threads on Rennlist about oil.
Do Used Oil Analysis (UOA's) with labs like Blackstone to learn more about your specific oil choices, change interval, and engine's health.

Don't know why it's not being stocked right now. Next time I will order it online before I need a change.
There is no "consensus", just do your research (MANY oil threads on this forum) and make your own decision. Either that or select a mechanic you trust and and follow his advice.

when it was new 993 recommended oils were
15w-40 or 15w-50 for ambients mostly >50F
15w-40 or 10w-40 or 10w30 for ambients mostly <50F
10w-30 or 5w-30 for ambients mostly <14F
at that time ZDDP content was not an issue as all the better oils had it in sufficient quantity
move forward from circa 1995 to circa 2011 and the concern for the effects of phosphorous on catalytic converter function/life has caused an across the board reduction in ZDDP to the detriment of engine wear. However some oils still have sufficient levels of ZDDP to warrant use.
among them
Mobil 1 15w-50 w/ P and ZN levels of 1200/1300ppm I'm comfortable at this level
but Mobil 1 5w-50 is at 1000/1000ppm where I'm less comfortable.
for best street protection use
Mobil 1 V-twin 20w-50 @ 1600/1700ppm
there is also a Mobil 1 racing line
0w-50 @ 1750/1850ppm but it lacks the detergents additive packages that allow street oil to last as long as it does, the racing oil would need to be changed weekly
of course you can also use alternative high ZDDP oil like Joe Gibbs or Brad Penn
the manufacturer's of newer cars are far more concerned w/ emissions warranties and have also changed engine design(roller rockers) to recommend the use of oils w/ lower ZDDP on new vehicles than in the past
look at the donut labels on the oil you are considereing
oil w/ this label is most affected by the reduction in ZDDP
oil w/ this label is least affected
here is a comparison chart for all Mobil oils

I have a comprehensive oil comparison lab test between many different motorcycle oils and in 50 weight group, Mobil 1 V-twin 20w-50 came second after AMSOIL Synthetic 20W-50 Motorcycle Oil (MCV) (there was 17 different 50 weight oils tested).
I'm just about to change oil and am going to go with that Mobil 1 V-twin or Amsoil MCV. I use that Mobil on my Buell as well although I've been thinking about switching to that Amsoil.
Will do the analysis between what I have now (Red Line) and Mobil V-twin or Amsoil.

I have been using the Mobil 1 V-Twin 20W50 in my 993 Turbo with excellent results the past year. UOA's keep improving after 3 changes and 15,000 miles. This was a great recommendation by Kevin.

Interesting I didn't know we could use Mobil 1 V-Twin(Motorcycle oil) for our cars. I will definitely try it out for my next oil change since it seems harder to find Mobil 1 syn 15w-50 and it sounds like a few folks are using to Mobil 1 V-Twin.

Just a tip, I use the V-Twin in the 993 but most of the stores around here only carry 4 qts max at a time. I guess that since it's for a motorcycle they don't sell that many qts. Usually I just wind up hitting 2 or 3 of the local stores to get what I need. YMMV
