Default Value Check --- 1998 C2S

Hi everyone --

The hunt for a Turbo continues, in the meantime I am looking to buy a C2S and have located a 1 owner CA car, 6900 miles. Artic Silver / Grey, motor sound, OBD, Limited Slip, Door Sills. Car is immaculate.

Thoughts / Thanks

$59,000 - 63,000

It's difficult to price the extremely low mileage cars because they are so rare.

I'd say $60K - $65k, plus you'll pay 6.1% duty at the border, $3K shipping from CA, Riv fee, drl's , cert and e-test etc. You will be north of $70K easily.

I have a '97 C2S with 14,000 miles in Toronto - Silver on black for $59,900 cert and e-tested

I agree with others who have said that something with this low of miles can ask/fetch a huge premium
Few are willing to pay, but there are so few in that price/low mile/ condition range that it levels out.

Wow!! If everything checks out as factual, and if that ultra low mileage beauty can be had in the low 60's, don't wait too long. Good luck!

The last C2S on E-Bay had bidding up to $ 58,000 and did not sell! It was also a low-mileage 993...

Just beware of Porsches that have not had enough exercise!!! Stored too long without driving may dry out seals, etc...

my .02 cents,

B.L

Funny on the classes of owners we have on Rennlist. A 6900 mile 14+ year old car has no appeal to me, primarily because the depreciation hit you will have IF you drive it is very steep. I am assuming you are planning to put this away in the garage?

These very low mileage cars are often problematic. They have had long periods with no oil circulation and then, when started up, often no procedures are taken to pre-lube, and they likely take a higher wear hit. Lot of the seals will dry out and leak even with the low mileage. Even cylinder bores have been know to pickup coatings of rust just from the air in the cylinders if they sit for a long time (a mechanic friend I know showed me an example last year from an earlier 911). Shocks have been sitting static for a long period of time, handbrakes may have been left on for years, you get the drift. The tires often are "rotten" in that the rubber is old and brittle, even if the treads are perfect.

However, there is certainly an appeal to having a "brand-new" 993, and maybe I am just jealous I do not have the money to throw at something like this!

As for importation, the current currency offset helps against the importation duty, and is not the shipping closer to $1800 - $2000 even if its cross country. Here is BC, recertification is about $150, so it's almost always cheaper to buy from the US and import into Canada at this time.

However, the local deals are likely be hassle-free.

Cheers,

Mike

Both of my low mile car have had no issues at all because they were properly maintained and driven every year, just not too many miles per drive.

Duty is 6.1%, exchange after fees is 3%, RIV is $247, brokerage is $235, DRL's + etest + safety if no issues are found is $300, recall clearance letter is $100, AC tax is $100, frieght from CA to Toronto is $2,850 enclosed (I quoted this last week), then add costs to fly/drive in to inspect. I'm looking for a 993 Turbo and hope I can find one that has already been brought into Canada by someone else as I know from experience that locals never take all of the above costs into consideration when comparing US prices to Canadian...

There is no relationship between low miles and whether or not proper maintenance was performed. Neither is there any relationship between "dry seals" and low miles. It is quite possible to bring the car up to operating temperature and for long enough to maintain the seals in perfect condition with extremely low miles actually accruing. Should you perform a PPI - absolutely...but by no means should you assume there is going to be problem.

So very true, those 'dry seals' stories are really really getting old. Extremely low miles and properly maintained cars are 'like new'. Nothing more and certainly nothing less.
Of course you can have a problem with a low mileage 993 but for sure you could have had the same problem when the car was a few weeks old.

Default how sad really

I just put another 150 miles on today, car is approaching 75K miles. Bike rack attached to the gutters, uber fancy carbon roadie on top, back and forth to a bike race.

Car is covered in dust, spatterings of cow **** and bugs from all the back road twisties I took to get there. A beautiful 70 degree sunny day, windows down, Stage lll's bellowing off everything.

The joy this car gives me every drive, even across town to simply get a bag of groceries, is simply astonishing. How sad that all these low mileage garage queens...AND their owners, are missing out on all the magic.

Life is just too damn short to just look at the car of your dreams. Get the hell out and drive it, RAIN or shine.

Exactly what I've always thought when you see low mileage examples. Park it (what is the point) or pay in the form of depreciation if you don't.

There is a happy balance of miles still ahead of you and a reasonable price.
