Here is my $.02.
1. PS2, great all round tire, they are very light, last OK, are very quiet. Give a great ride, good grip, very predicable. Not the fastest, not the sharpest. $$$$
2. Yoko AD08, quite possibly the fastest street tire out there. Very quick turn in, very sticky, very good in the corners. Rides harsher & louder then the P2S, also not the best in the cold (under 40) & rain. Also can over heat easily when pushed hard then get greasy. Don't wear well. $$$
3. HTZIII, CHEAP, CHEAP, CHEAP! Rides very quiet, & smooth, ok grip, good in the cold (drove them on ice & snow), good in the rain. Wear best of the group. A set of these is almost the same as one rear PS2. CHEAP! $
4. Star Spec, limited tire sizes, heats up very fast, wonderful grip. Great track day tire. No the quietest, not best in the cold. Wears fast. $$
Haven't driven the Hancooks, but they are fast, & cheap. An Auto-Xer got them late last season, & was almost 1sec quicker then the rest of us.
If it were me, for a car not driven hard, & just for enjoyment, the PS2 is the tire, then if considering cost, the HTZR III.

I put a set of Hankook V12s (235/35/19 and 295/35/19) and spent $875 installed. Have tracked the car and they handle beautifully. Looked at Road and Track, and these rated right behind the Michelin PS/2. The Ventus have a 280 tread wear rating vs 220 for PS/2. The tires are 2lbs heavier per tire than the Michelins.
When I priced the PS/2s, I was looking at $2,000 installed.

I ordered a set of Hankook V12's. I don't ( and won't) ever track the car, and really only use it for an occasional pretty day drive and as a date car with my wife.
Too many other things to spend $$ on than tires!

I'm using Toyo R1Rs. They've had awesome results in autox. I started autocrossing hard when i first learned to drive so I'm a bit biased. Whatever wins in solo seems to be what I lean towards. They seem to grip well on the track, although I've never been on the track with any other tire on this car so I have nothing to compare to. They do hum a bit on the highway, but i don't really notice it over my exhaust and music.

So I went to my local tires shop where I've been getting rubber to the last 15 years for a couple of rears for the 97 S.
Apparently Michelin is no longer producing tires for the S or 4S.
I don't track the car, in fact I hardly drive it anymore, so I don't need the ultimate grip. I wouldn't mind not dropping a ton of $$ either.
What are folks running now?

Tire rack had a test in Oct 2010 of max performance tires...the Continental ExtremeContact DW ranked first (do not confuse with the DWS which is all season). Tire rack is selling a set for $852 plus shipping/install/etc.

I just installed these. They handle very good and have low road noise for me. I have not driven in the rain yet but they are suppose to be very good.

Here is a good calculator. If you enter your car data and then the tire sizes you wish to use it will give you the diameter difference (and other data). On the 993C4S it needs to be less than 4%. I think Porsche recommends a 4% tire diameter limit on any 911 (ABS and other considerations) I use OEM sizing for my 1996 C4S and the diameter difference is a little over 1%.

You did not say what size tire you currently have but assuming you have turbo rims then stock OEM size is 225 40/16 & 285 30/18. I was told directly by Michelin that the new Super Sports would not be available for the rear size nor will they have the rear if you plus size
. I believe the PS2 is being phased out as Michelin is saying the Super Sport is replacing the PS2.

After a years and @ 1500 miles with the Hankoooks I can strongly reccomend them. At first they were a little "squirmy" but after a couple hi ndres miles this disappeared. They have phenomenal grip, comfortable ride and are quiet as well.
I won't be going back to Michelin.

Rationalized that the tires on the '95 were getting too old so I ordered a set of the Hankook V12's. We just returned from a short trip up to the mountains to attend our Carolinas Region "In Den Bergen" week-end. I'm sold! These tires are smooth, quiet and responsive. Better yet, $466 delivered from Discount Tire Direct via eBay. Now I need to rationalize a set for the '98!
