New to 993 : Quick Simple Questions
I presently have a 996 for 4 years now . iam going to the 993 . i just had some general questions .
1. A 996 has a rms/shaft issue , its deadly expensive . Is a 993 known to have very expensive mechanical meltdowns ? Will i be surprised ?
2. General up keep. Presently my 996 is a tank, general opinion on the 993 engine .
3. Is the 993 C4S WIDER than the 2 S ? are these cars similar except for the 4 wheel drive option ?
Anything else i should know please but your input in.
Thank You
Errico

1. Not really. Just make sure you get a car with maintenance history and get a PPI with a compression/leakdown test.
2. The 993 is tanker.
3. Same width. C4S has big brakes, and standard LSD and 4 channel ABS.

1. As you probably know, the 993 does not have the IMS/RMS issue. The engines are very strong and I am not aware of any major failures of that type. The mechanical weak point of the 993 is the valve guides which can begin to leak, but is not a catastrophic failure as the IMS failure would be.
2. These cars are tanks also. They will of course be older than yours and will have to have replacements and repairs that will need to be done. Best is to buy a car from an owner who has kept up with the maintenance. You will find that most well kept cars have had their major services doen.
3. The C42 an C2S have the same body and are the same width. Both are wider that he C2 and C4.
Here is a great place to learn about the common issues with the 993. http://www.pcarworkshop.com/index.ph...1994_-_1998%29
RL is a great place to find a car. Most here agree that a PPI by a competent shop is a must. The SAI issue is relatively common and though not catastrophic, can prevent you from smogging the car in some areas. So get familiar with it.
993 are great. Glad you are "going back to basics."

errico,
SAI is the Secondary Air Injection system. It's common on many vehicles and runs at startup to help the cats heat up quicker to do their job. 993s suffer from this system becoming clogged and throwing a check engine light.
A simple search on any of these topics will keep you busy for days.

PPI = pre-purchase inspection. Have the inspection done by someone who really knows air-cooled cars, usually not a dealer. Let us know where you are and someone can point you toward a good shop.

2. 993 generally more of a tank than the 996.
3. No. Pretty much; C4s has turbo "big red" brakes" c2s does not.

Wise decision. You are definitely going to enjoy the 993 a lot if you get a good one. Take your time and don't settle, and buy from the right dealer or person. Do a serious search on this site for details on certain dealers to buy from and avoid. Both.

1. Dual distributor belt that could break and be expensive the longer you drive
I was about to purchase a 997 trade-in the dealer plans to sell as CPO, but they had to cancel the deal since the car needed a new engine due to the bearing issue. Very happy with the 993 purchase.

Suggest you read up on the @#%X+ Immobilizer issues. Early '95's were spared but from then on, they came with it. Be sure whatever 993 you purchase that the system is free of Immobilizer issues and that you are schooled in its operation.

Do it ! Do it! Just do it!
All joking aside... I think the sai issue, valve issue and immobolizer issues happen more with high mileage or cars not properly maintained.
