my guess on this topic is that:
1). There is a lot of mistaken information on the "high cost" of maintenance on a 993TT. Its really about the same as for a C4S, which is about the same as all the rest of the 993s. Sure, the TTs have turbo units, which if not properly cooled will need replacement (~$1500/pair for rebuilds), and a goofily complex clutch slave cylinder. On the other hand, there are only 6 plugs, and rare instances of an SAI clogging issue, which is very common on the NA cars. About a wash.
2). I think that the 993TT is considered the "pinnacle" of aircooled Porsches, and therefore should be more collectable in the long run.

IMHO.

Buy the C4S. You won't realize what you are missing.

One other alternative is to mod a naturally aspirated 4s a la Ninemeister / Racetek. The objective is certainly not to match the turbos in straight lines, but driving experience should be phenomenal...obviously not cheap though.

This is what I am currently doing - will be able to provide feedback this summer. Can't wait!!!

Thanks for all the great input, here's a little update. I was convinced to buy the turbo with all of your advice.

The dealer faxed me some maintenance records yesterday afternoon - only 4 pages total which looked pretty sketchy. I heard nothing back this morning and was busy at work. I looked at their website in the afternoon and the car was SOLD! Bad timing I guess.

The 993 C4S listed on autotrader.ca seems like some kind of ebay shipping scam; the sellers refuses to fax me any details on the car or talk to me over the phone. Go figure, it sounded too good to be true.

The Twin Turbo is actually a whole lot easier to drive and more user friendly than the C2S or C4S !! With the power assisted hydrolic clutch that just falls to the floor and the different torque curve, and smooth instant power, there is simply NOOOOOOOOOOO comparison !! One on BOOOOOOOOST,you'll only look back to see what is trying to catch you !!! LOL.. Buy the TURBO !!

I think, if you do not own a Porsche, right now, you are free to choose.
Every porsche owner, or quiet everyone, dreams a Turbo one....so go for it...or you' ll cry for the wrong choice!

All Iknow is that once you have owned a Turbo, there really is no going back.
Ask me (and others) how I know.
As great as the NA cars are, and they are great, the sheer power is addictive.
They are hungry on petrol, yes, a bit more expensive to maintain, who knows because mines brilliant, but a TT is a TT at the end of the day.
Plus you won't have to tell people that it's not a Turbo, when they ask you if the 4S is.
Trust me, it happened a lot too me.
If you drive both, the Turbo will go home with you.

If the decision is between C4S and Turbo there is no question I would go Turbo as you will regret not getting it it if Turbo was an option for you. Now if it is Turbo vs RS....

turbo no question. These cars are expensive to fix period. You'll have issues with both eventually but you'll won't regret the Turbo but you may wished you upgraded to it when driving the C4S. Look for a 97 turbo if you can.

Unfortunately, I have only test drove the C4S version in the past and both of the above cars are out of my province. I will most likely be purchasing after a PPI is passed without ever driving the car.

Which is easier to live with as a daily driver? Which will hold its value better? How much higher are annual maintenance costs with the turbo - 30% or 50% higher? Are maintenance visits more frequent with the turbo? Is the price gap between the two cars reasonable/worth it? Any additional comments would be greatly appreciated.
65k for a 96 turbo...whats the deal. That price is amazing

what's with the obsession with more power? why not a gt2 then? i bet 70% of the people on the forum dont even know how to properly handle or exploit that power. since the OP is doing quick drives to work with it, its just a complete waste of money (unless you want to hold it as a collector, major drool factor when buddies come to the house). i understand there is an attraction for driving the top dog or seeing a “turbo” badge but I’m a huge fan of NA engines. I stepped out of a ’08 m3 coupe (414hp - 8300rpm screaming v8) and into a stripped out c4s (300hp on a good day) and its already a hand full on the track for me. but YMMV
