Did you get a PPI?

I was reading over on F Chat and this thread was there. I thought what a great question and great read.
It may be that Ferrari's definatley need ta PPI more given the **** belt change thing among other issues, I don't know. But I thought I might see what happens here with the same question.
The only time I have had a PPI was when I bought my second Pcar, a 1983 SC. It passed.
I'm onto my 7th Porsche and have never had one since the SC.
So far so good

Bought my 993 a year ago without a ppi. I saw the car, put a small deposit, and picked it up the following day.
Bought a non-runner Porsche (968) last week at auction. All it needed was a battery and had the airbag light extinguished.
Both great cars.
I like to buy on gut instinct, condition of body and interior, and service history.
It is a bit of a gamble though.
Costa.

I purchased my first 993 in January 2011. I had all maintenance records and knew the habits of both POs. No PPI was necessary. I would probably get one if that information was not available.

A PPI has saved me thousands on the last couple of car I purchased. I still purchased them but at a negotiated lower price based on the PPI findings. It's highly recommended, and cheap insurance. It also takes some of the emotional bias out of the purchase.

I got my car for a fantastic ... Old Kbb price. The guy had records and I talked to his mechanic.
So I grabbed it and ran. The mechanic called me a@&)(;; theif. He said if he had known it was for sale at that price, he would have bought the car. I've had the car 6k miles and the only issues are the same that most rennlisters have ...all due to the age of the car.
Now with that said... Every other car I bought, I have saved more than the cost of the ppi.

I had no PPI done on my first (944S2), second (968) and third (993C4) Porsches. I was lucky, the cars were releatively new at the time and I had no (immediate) problems. However, when buying my 993tt I considered it non-optional. I rejected one car that I made an offer on subject to PPI, having been advised major gearbox work was needed and too many other things to warrant making a sensible counter offer. The one I bought had things to attend to, but at least I knew about them in advance and as part of the sale the dealer replaced the rear shocks, leaking cam cover and some other bits. It would have cost me a further £2k had these not been picked up and sorted before purchase.

I had a PPI when I bought and it passed. The PO had full records and my initial look at the car was favorable. I just wanted the piece of mind. My dad was looking at another 993. We initially liked want we saw and he wanted to take it a step further. He had the PPI done and found an oil leak at the base of a few cylinders and a few other things. It turns out, because of the PPI, he passed on that particular car.
In my opinion, a PPI is worth the money.

Be careful:
I had a PPI done by an Official UK Porsche Centre: they highlighted many minor issues but nothing serious. I bought the car and on first car wash, I noticed a 4 inch by 1.5 inch patch of rust inside a wheel arch (black car hence hard for me to see). PPI made no mention of this.
Offical Porsche place said clearly the rust was not in place when the PPi was done (2 weeks prior) and was "clearly a result" of my washing with a power washer (which I have never used). What cheek hey.
Went to small claims court and got panel fixed at their expense and replacement car in the meantime. Incidentally turns out the car seller had an account with the same Official Porsche dealer, but I state no conclusions about that. Make sure you get your money's worth form somebody trustworthy.

It still amazes me how many people don't get a PPI. It's cheap insurance and even though these cars are very reliable you never know what you're gettinginto unless a knowledgable person looks thoroughly at the car.

Had PPIs for my 1996 Cabrio and 1997 C4S. I would strongly recommend it but go to a good shop that might charge more (because they do more and know what o look for ...). Just search RL for the area that interests you to find the right place.

I got a PPI on my 993, I did not on my SC, but that was a different situation, in that the SC was a customer car that my mechanic already knew, and had known for 17 years, so he know the car inside and out. I guess in some way, it had a 17 year PPI, but I didn't have to pay for it.
There are very rare circumstances where I wouldn't get a PPI, and only the above circumstance is one that comes to mind.
Even the most trustworthy of sellers might not know about something with their own car.
