Default GT3 Engine in a 993?

Guys!

There is a 996 GT3 engine with 10k miles for sale on eBay for $10k!

The GT3 block/case is identical to the 993, and fits right on the gear box, and the 993 rear engine carrier fits right on the back of the engine. Have any of you done this before? The job should be fairly straight forward, with front radiators, plumbing of coolant and power steering (I have no AC or heat in my 993), and a Motec M600 ECU.

Is it as straight forward as I think, or am I missing out on something here? With a GT3 engine, a good exhaust and air intake and the Motec, you can have a 993 with way over 400Hp on a normally aspirated 3.6L, and with a 8,400rpm redline!

Would that be fun or what?

There are a few guys that have put GT3 engines into earlier cars as race cars, not 993's.

The biggest challenge would be the plumbing for the cooling, I believe the power steering wouldn't be much of an issue...

I have thought about this myself a few times, I would also use the transmission and shifter cables from the GT3 as well.....

Keep us posted..

And all the RS America guys will shout "who needs power steering"? (Yes, I love mine in the yellow car. Racing the RSA was tiring unless I was running Hoosiers.)

Non-Porsche, and blasphemy, but with what a light V-8 crate engine runs these days...................

You could have a very reliable 450bhp LS1 V8 for about $3.5k

Which is only a fraction of what the project would end up costing.

One of our front-line Spec Miata guys out here (who got his start with a 911) has built an LS1 Miata for NASA GTS. Even as proven and straightforward as that should be, he's got a huge amount into the car now to actually make it work.

Here's him lapping me in the Spec Miata at a race last year (damned those 45 second split starts that put us a half a lap behind before we know it):

What's wrong with that? They're primarily liquid cooled anyway........what's the oil also doing, when you think about it?

I get that we can be all nostalgic on our series of cars versus what came after. But isn't that mostly about the M96 boat anchor? What if every 996 came with a detuned GT3 engine, say about 320HP. I think many here would hold their nose on the interior/exterior styling and appreciate time moved on. Kinda like having a discussion over a '73 and a '74, especially a '73RS and a '74-5 ROW Carrera.

Nothing wrong with that. If I wanted a water cooled Porsche, I would get a 996 or 997 and be done with it.

Putting a water cooled engine in the 993 misses the whole point for me. That's all.

I've got a buddy who's in the middle of putting a 2010 3.8 997 engine in a 2001 BoxterS...He's had to do quite a bit of custom work, and change the wiring harness. But in another month or so, it should be pretty fun to drive. BTW, the 3.8 was 22 pounds lighter than the stock BoxterS engine...

Tell Dean & Laura hi...they were the "dealers" who got me hooked on track. "First one is free" he said as we got out of his car after the first session.

Damned expensive friends

The M96 motor is the problem, not the water cooling, IMHO. If it had been less prone to "catastrohic failure" I'd probably still have my 02 (320HP 3.6). I originally bought the car because it had a new/reman Porsche motor installed a few thousand miles before I bought it @ 27K miles. To me it's knowing that the basic engine is strong. Unfortunately a new motor doesn't fix the fundamental design problem; "new" motors go pop too. I can live with a little oil consumption caused by less than ideal valve guides (air-cooled) but the M96 in all it's versions will forever have a negative stigma attached to it and any car it powers. Reliability goes a long way in making a car attractive to me.

It really would have been nice if all 996/997s were powered by some derivitave of the GT1 block/GT3 engine. To me at least, the knowledge that the basic design and architecture of the engine was the same in any given series of the air-cooled generation was what made the 911 so attractive. The day the new DFI motor is the basis for ALL new 911 motors, GT models and racecars included, is the day this magic returns IMHO.
