Another "will they fit" Q?

Bill,
Ah. Thx. I've been using Toyo RA-1s, and I would like to run 225s given my 7 fronts, but they don't come in that for the 17s...they go down to 205s, which is crazy and I'd start understeering everywhere, even if I went to 255 in back. The mfgr and the tire supplier both stated that 7 will work on the 235, and they do, but they are a little squirrelly unshaved and when new.
The best bet for me is to just switch wheels to 8 and 10x18s, but even with that in the RA-1 it is limited. I could go 245/40 in front with a 25.6 diameter, matched to a 275/35, with the same diameter.
One Q: You said, , but you said earlier you run 8s?

as You say in 18" you would need to run 254/40 & 275/35 which are both 25.6" tires, the f/r match is good it's just that 25.6" is too tall for my taste and makes fitment more difficult too, 285/30 x18 is ~25.1"
in 17 you have the same(or worse) heigh tissues w/ 235/40 & 275/40 as far as height goes and also the f/r difference. On my street car I went to 225/45 & 255/40 x17 but would want something bigger if it was a track car. As i mentioned you loose performance when you go to a smaller wheel width, 235/40 might mount on a 7 but it will never have the performance of an 8 or even better 8.5 or 9.
for the 993 I have 3 sets of wheels & tires
2 are 8 & 10 x18(1 set is street and 1 set is wet track) and 1 is 8.5 & 10 x18 for dry track

Sizing in the RA-1 will very soon be limited to the sizes they sell for specific Spec Series. So if you have a source for the RA-1 tire and like them, buy all you can. Toyo is phasing out the RA-1 and shifting over to the R-888. I got this directly from Toyo 2 days ago (3/21/11).
I loved my RA-1 tires, ran them on 7" and 9" wheels, 235/45 on front and 275/40 on the rear. Sure the wheels are not wide enough...but they worked OK. 8" and 10" wheels would have been better.

So forgetting tires for a second, 8.5/18/ET 52 is doable, but prob not any deeper (aka smaller # offset), but the 10/18/ET 40 rears I saw look like they are for a WB fitment then.

There is theoretical, and there is "real world."
"Real World"....you wont' have to worry about Toyo fitment...they are not making much in the way of RA-1 tires anymore. Reviews on the R-888 are mixed at best. I have not been convinced to go there....yet! I did love my RA-1 tires, when I could get them in 17", 18" is an availability problem too
BTW, when Toyo was around, I ran 235s on the front and 275s on the rear:
235/45/17
275/40/17
They worked great, no problem....but, a 45 profile is a little tall, and you'll notice that the tires are rolling over a bit.
I went to 18" RA-1
245/40/18
275/35/18
Can't get these anymore.
Now I run the same size in Nitto NT-01. The Nitto tires are very good, seem to be as good as or better then the old RA-1.
I also run Hankooks Z 214 in 18" and for the first time, I will run a set of Kumho 710 in 18". The Hankooks are about $1,050 out the door, same for the Nittos. The 710s, I am awaiting my bill for these.
With 18", I use MY 2002 996 wheels (3 sets) , OEM'd for Porsche by BBS, pretty light....but susceptible to bending if abused. I think now I would go to Tire Rack (Our Sponsor!!!) and get OZ wheels, about $1,500 a set, 55mm front and 65mm rear off set. Used MY 2002 996 wheels are about $1,200 a set used and there is no guarantee that they will be straight and true.
And finally, you can't fudge on the off sets. They are what they are. 50 to 55mm front and 65mm rear. That's it, end of story.
And finally, finally, my car is at RS ride height, probably lower, with > 2.5 degrees of negative camber front and slightly less rear.
Finally, finally, finally, just listen to Bill Verberg, he is no poseur.
Now I am off to my local wine bar...its Taco Tuesday!!!!
And in closing...you were wondering when? ....Buy Hoosier R6 tires or Hoosier Slicks if you are a racer and want to win. Yokohama slicks are right there too. Most of the other DOT tires you will not find on the wheels of the winners....I hope to add Kumho 710 to my winners list soon. BTW, I am a mid-pack also ran...but I have been quickest on Hoosier R6 "sticker" tires. They just plain rock!
