it was an option in 97 then standard in 98 at the same sticker price as te 97 NB coupe. New 97 buyers where a bit upset.

The wheel thing was a hodge podge using spacers to keep the costs down, In other words NB wheels.

Default 1998 C2 production

I am looking at a 1998 C2S coupe. Could someone direct me to a site that shows how many of these were built for MY 1998. Also it would be nice to see the VIN sequence from the first to last for MY 98. Seller says his car is one of the last air cooled cars built. I would like to verify that.

It seems everyone selling a 993 likes to say "one of the last air cooled cars built"

Check out the "Post yer VIN!" thread.

Mine (#1276) is a December '97 build (the cars around my VIN say Dec 19, although I have not personally confirmed that). Not sure if that was the last build date or not, but it's fairly close to the end of the line for C2S's.

I would go so far as to say that is VERY close to the end. Mine (#1001) was a couple of weeks ahead of yours and I doubt there were many after you.

I would think that on the list of important attributes one's perspective 993 purchase should have, this would rank near the bottom. All 1998 993s were among the last ones made.

As pointed out...every 993 is "one of the last air-cooled". Yeah, '98 is the "closest to the last". Unless you are buying a garage queen with ultra low miles AND don't plan on driving it (where's the pleasure in owning it, get a poster to look at instead), the year won't matter much at all. I'll take a well maintained car over any particular year.

I didn't see mentioned above, but C4S also had LSD installed as standard equipment. Note that the wheels are NOT turbo (hollow) spokes, but turbo-look (solid) spoke....I got fooled when I bought mine, but in the end didn't care since I like the look.

Search is your friend. Search "production numbers" here on RL in the 993 forum. Example:

993 C2S were built for MY98, IIRC, so you know the factory thought them to be special too.

I searched Rennlist and and found a number of posts indicating handling differences between a C4S and a C2. I recently drove a C4S and indeed it was much different from my C2. My C2 was much more planted, etc.

Curious .. is there much of a difference between the C2 and the C2S?

I am not suggesting that there isn't a fifference in handling between a RWD & AWD 993 however I believe that much of the difference in handling between your car and the C4S you drove is likely to be mostly due to differences in suspension setup, tyres, suspension condition etc. I have experienced huge "chalk and cheese" changes and improvements in my cars handling following a good wheel alignmnent and new tyres.
Cheers

if you plan to track the car at all, you would want the Big Reds (read up about it). and if its on the track, you'll appreciate the extra safety net the AWD will provide. guess which one i decided on

There are a number of links that describe differences between the C2 and the C4S. However, I'm curious if one would see much difference between the C2S and a C2. Assume both cars have dialed in suspensions and similar tires etc.

C4S prices are higher compared with C2S prices in Australia. There are also not as many C4S's for sale on searching the net. Love the big reds as they stand out when the car is parked - don't think that there will be much difference in braking performance with normal road driving. I prefer the C4S because I am biased.
