Default 4-Spoke Steering Wheels Interchangeable? Just bought one from Ebay!

Thinking of buying a used core and sending it to Poland to get recovered. Noticed that the part numbers are either not listed or when they are they vary slightly. Def. starts with a '993' prefix though.

Are they interchangeable? I have a '97, and I'd want to swap my own airbag onto it when it came back. This one on Ebay is 993.347.804.55

NEW INFO - just bought this used wheel for $22!!!! from Ebay -

There are 2 versions of these wheels. Main difference is that the brackets that hold the air bag is deeper in one version, so you may need to get an airbag that fits that wheel, or you could swap the brackets with your current wheel.

Also, the splines are aligned differently in both versions. So, if your steering wheel was perfectly centered and you get the other version, you may find that the wheel may not be centered without an alignment as the splines are a bit off.

I believe that 95's and early 96 used the first version, and late 96's through early 996's and early Boxsters used the latest wheel with shallower airbag brackets.

It's hard to see in the pictures, but looks like the one that you just bought is for a 95/ early 96. You may need to swap the bracket that is in your wheel with this one once you get it back from Poland, and your wheel may not be centered once you install it.

Ask me how I know...

Its hard to figure it out. Mine has a later part revision number - 993.347.804.55.

I see that the airbag retaining frame is different so is it okay just to change them out? What about the splines?

Yes, you can change the bracket so you can use the same airbag that you have now. The splines on both versions of the wheel not being aligned the same is a different story and is a problem. The only way to center the wheel is to do an alignment.

I'll get an alignment. Problem solved.

The vendor said the part number was 993.347.804.55

I've read elsewhere on this forum that these came off '98's...so hopefully I'm okay? Anybody can confirm this?

I know, Chuck, right? Now hopefully this is the right one and will go on with a minimum of fuss. I blame you in any case for getting me thinking about upgrading my wheel!

I accept all blame. And when you get the newly covered wheel, I accept all accolades.

Sure looks like it. When it arrives see how your air bag fits it. I found out the hard way a few years back that not all are a match,

Sunset Porsche confirmed this -s the '97-onwards version! Yay! They did say I should check the condition of the airbag retainer, and either swap my known good one in, or buy a new one. I got such a steal on the wheel in any case.

Ben, What are your plans with the new (old) wheel? Recovered in TechArt fashion?

I was actually going to recover it a bit like Chuck W. He had a brilliant picture of the work that the guys in Poland did for him, and I think it compliments the 993 perfectly. I was on the fence about switching to a 3-spoke bag, and had never thought about recovering the original 4-spoke.
