No. The Turbo is worthwhile. "Hand-built" engine with a 964- part number FTW. Fortunately, while driving it, you can't see the outside.
996s will perhaps befall a worse fate as 944s: Third owners get their grubby paws on them for less than $20K, discover what a major repair involves and either defer maintenance or scrap the car. It may be even easier to get upside down repair vs. value than a 944.
